Excerpt: Baten Kaitos (BK) is an odd mixture of elements that work astoundingly well with a few failed components that turn a potentially amazing experience into one that is merely mediocre. On one hand, BK has some of the most strikingly original and masterfully imagined set of backgrounds and worlds that I have seen in any RPG of recent note. On the other hand, the character designs are bland and boring.
Excerpt: And that's only the tip of the iceburg. There's the strange item system where each item changes form as time passes within the game - a healing item might become a blob of poison suddenly, and the character who tries to heal him or herself suddenly finds that he or she has ingested a poisonous substance.
Excerpt: Baten Kaitos is a card-based RPG that features 1000+ cards, over 140 attack combos, and gorgeous graphics. Even with its fair share of problems, which are mostly due to the fact that card-based games aren't exactly "all that", it is still worth checking out for GameCube owners. Read all about it right here.
