River City Ransom EX

Portable Review

  • Excerpt: If there’s one series that has a really convoluted history when it comes to American translations, it’s got to be the Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Hot Blooded Tough Guy Kunio Renegade Super Dodge Ball Nintendo World Cup River City Ransom THE The story behind this one is fairly simple: players take on the role of one of two High School students, Ryan and Alex, who are for the fight of their lives, as they cross through River City and try to rescue River City High.

  • Conclusion: In cast you did not notice I love the original game so freaking much that I based my icon of the authors on the original sprites. The gameplay is simple to learn but it just does not get old no matter how many dim-witted guys you pummel with the garbage can. BARF! BTW I am now drawing my comic and it will premiere on Monday July 5th.

  • Excerpt: Not quite the River City we remember… Back in 1989, Technos released two titles in the same month. One was Double Dragon II: The Revenge. This was the follow up to the 1988 NES debut of Double Dragon. The other game released was River City Ransom. Both games were of the beat-em up action style, but since Double Dragon had the established franchise, River City Ransom sunk into obscurity.

  • Excerpt: River City Ransom wound up being one of the greatest games on the classic NES console, but scores of NES junkies never got a chance to try it out. Its simplistic, cartoony graphics provided a comedy value to the fighting, and the excellent two-player action was unrivalled. The real innovative stuff in RCR was the RPG system that allowed you to build up stats by buying food and items at the various malls throughout the game.

  • Excerpt: Nostalgia can be a very devious thing. It has this nasty habit of preventing people from remembering what things--in this case, games--were really like when they were first released. As video games have slowly grown up, we've started to see more and more games play the nostalgia card in attempts to grab fans of old games and give them something new. In some cases, trading off a popular older name works wonders.

  • Excerpt: So, like its NES bother Super Dodge Ball, River City Ransom gets a GBA revamp. This game gets not just a complete facelift to 16 bit style graphics, but also many new features. The best new feature, and probably the worst, is the save system. No longer will gamers be plagues by extremely long strings of random symbols and letters. Now you can simply create a data file on the game pack with your character’s abilities.
