Metal Slug Advance Review

VideoGamer.com
28 April 2005
  • Excerpt: Metal Slug roamed exclusively in the arcades and the high-level Neo Geo consoles for years, but just recently that's all begun to change. Change to the degree that we now have a version on the GameBoy Advance. Of course, we also had two versions on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but this is the first truly authentic (comparable to the arcade versions) Metal Slug title on a handheld.

Metal Slug Advance review (GBA)

HonestGamers
19 March 2005
  • Excerpt: MSA's primary flaw is that it's conspicuously devoid of the heroic intensity that stirred fans of the original so. On a mechanical level, it's visibly Metal Slug; your pistol-packing grenade-lobbing hero storms through the side-scrolling levels in the expected fashion, terminating the screaming infantrymen and adorable artillery with regulatory-extreme levels of prejudice. And yet the battles utterly fail to excite. What's to blame?

Metal Slug Advance

The Armchair Empire
13 March 2005
  • Conclusion: - Brings back old school side scrolling shooter, with accompanying high challenge level - Good graphical presentation that’s true to the original game - Can use metal slug vehicles to annihilate the enemy - Classic boss battles against mighty machines "... the entire game can be completed in just a few hours..." Contra may be considered the most famous “old school” 2D side-scrolling shooter, but right behind it is the Metal Slug series.
  • Pros: - Brings back old school side scrolling shooter, with accompanying high challenge level, - Good graphical presentation that’s true to the original game, - Can use metal slug vehicles to annihilate the enemy, - Classic boss battles against mighty machines
  • Cons: - Just five levels (with some hidden bonus levels), - Only about five hours of gameplay, - Card collecting does nothing to affect the gameplay

Metal Slug Advance

GamersHell.com
30 December 2004
  • Excerpt: If one considers the realm of sidescrolling 2D shooters, the genre choices of very elite and competent titles narrow to a short list of exemplars that have largely defined the experience. The Metal Slug series, started by SNK back in 1996 for its NeoGeo system, is a shining example of how these simple game structures, refined around the art of weapon enhancement and timed jumping, can gather fanboy steam and germinate the fringe status of “cult classicâ€Â.
