Expert Review

GameCubicle.com
6 January 2004
  • Summary: Advance Wars is a deep and complex turn-based strategy game that places an emphasis on tactical intelligence over quick reflexes. In fact, games in the "Wars" series from Nintendo have appeared there on Game Boy and Super Famicom. Advance Wars is the first taste most North American gamers will have of the series, and the game is a virtual smorgasboard for strategy fans of all levels of ability.
  • Pros: 114 Battle Maps, Beautiful Organized Presentation, Addictive Single & Multi-Player Gameplay, Unlimited Mission Content & Replay Value
  • Cons: Music Slightly Lacking

Advance Wars

Into Liquid Sky
2 January 2004
  • Excerpt: Advance Wars has a fairly simple premise: The player is an advisor to a group of Commanding Officers for the Orange Star army, one of four competing nations in conflict with each other. After a series of missions in which the player learns the battle system while forcing the Blue Moon army out of Orange Star territory, you are allowed access to the Campaign mode, multiplayer battles and the War Room, where you can fight on a variety of battlefields.
  • Pros: Easy combat system to pick up, Graphics are clean and work great for the gameplay, Tons of modes, Great multiplayer
  • Cons: Some battles are easy because of hints dropped in story

  • Excerpt: If I were a complete recluse, and had never heard about Japan's best handheld strategy game - Advance Wars , I would still be able to easily deduce where it had come from by taking one look at the graphics. Starting with the opening movie sequence, and continuing all the way through to the end, Advance Wars uses the distinctive big head and eyes/no nose formula made popular in America by the Pokémon series.

  • Excerpt: To be honest, I don’t play on my Gameboy Advance often but when I do it always seems to be Advance Wars that takes pride of place in the cartridge slot. I bought it with my GBA last year and its smooth graphics, perfectly balanced gameplay and wealth of game modes keep drawing me back again and again. Advance Wars is based around the fictional conflict between the Orange Star and Blue Moon armies.
