Philips CD-i is a video game console and also a media player developed and marketed by Royal Philips Electronics N.V. It was released for retail in 1991 and discontinued in 1996 after 570,000 units sold world wide. It supports CD-i, Audio CD, CD+G, Karaoke CD and VCD media formats.

Features

The CD-i’s CPU is built with 16-bit 68070 CISC Chip (68000 core) and clock speed of 15.5 MHz. It produces resolution of 384 × 280 to 768 × 560 pixels with 16.7 million colours on screen. Also, it allows MPEG 1 Cartridge Plug-In for VideoCD and Digital Video. In addition, it is installed with CD-RTOS (based on Microware's OS-9) as its operating system. Furthermore, it is built with 1.5 MB of main RAM, single speed CD-ROM drive, ADPCM eight channel sound and 16-bit stereo sound. It weighs 1.46 kg (with DV cart) and 1.21 kg (without DV). Philips CD-i softwares mainly focused on educational, music and also self-improvement genre, and some video games. Among the releases include Connect Four, hotel Mario, Girl’s Club, Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Name That Tune and two versions of The Joker's Wild. There are several models’ series of CD-i player produced by Philips including 200, 300, 400 and 600 series. Accessories available includes CD-i mouse, roller controller, CD-i trackball, I/O port splitter, touchpad controller, gamepad controller, IR wireless controller and S-video cable.
