Default MP3-player vs. Cell Phones

Since my MP3-Player broke a couple of months ago I've been thinking about buying a new one. I used to have a 20 GB iPod. I always felt that it was a bit big but I used it as a external harddrive so I accepted the size. This time around I want that smallest MP3-player that I can get. The reason is pretty much that I'm tired of carrying around both a cell phone and a large MP3-player. I'm not really a purse-person so you can probably understand why. But on the other hand what's the point in buying a MP3-player when most cell phones have a MP3-player? I can understand that if you want good sound quality a MP3-player is probably better, but I can honestly don't hear the difference. Is there any reason left for buying a MP3-player instead of a new cell phone?

I think you pose an interesting question and I guess we are already seeing some changes on the market not to say the least with Apples iPhone. I think there is room for both types at least for a while longer. When you are out running you want the smallest possible mp3-player. When you are travelling somewhere you want to have as much as possible into one device so you can travel lightly.

I think we still see a lot of compromises when it comes to choosing an mp3 playing device. I would like to see a mp3 player with internet connectivity so I could listen to spotify, pandora, last.fm etc. Until then I guess I will use Itunes and whatever ipod device I can get my hands on .

At the moment the biggest downside I find with using a cell phone as mp3 player is that lack of easy connection with my favourite ear phones. I think however some of the latest Nokia models feature a 3.5 jack for easy headphone connection and this is for me at least a long awaited feature.

i am curious why people still use mp3 now, why should we carry mp3 along when there is a device (cellphone) do the work of this?
since the sound effect come from a cell now has improved, and more and more cell now adapt 3.5mm earphone jack
In terms of battery performance, cell do lie in disadvandage, often less then 10 hours

Using the iPhone for 2 months, the problem gets to the battery. Taking pictures and listing music can quickly drain the battery. If people use a mobile phone for work and play than play music, I'll suggest people to choose a cell phone without all the compromises.

Nowadays, most of the mp3 players packed with a lot of features. However, they don’t seem care about the sound quality anymore.

ever since i got my samsung ugh300 and motorola k3 (both phones can play high quality mp3 songs), i haven't even given the possibility of buying a separate mp3 player a second thought. i don't see the point anymore, truth be told. it's just added expense on your part. i mean, it's better that you get a phone that can play songs instead of buying an item that can only do one thing.

I still prefer to keep my mobile and mp3 player (when the new one arrives) separate. If I get an N96 that may change, but I don't want to be charging my phone up every day.
