The D700 stores data on the CompactFlash memory in Nikon's proprietary .RAW and in internationally-supported JPEG and TIFF. JPEG is lossy, but TIFF is non-lossy as long as it's stored with all the bits the camera can deliver. Does anyone know whether all 14 bits/pixel/colour of the D700 are stored in the TIFF storage option?
Part of the reason for avoiding .RAW is that Nikon has designed all its software so it won't work on anything but the newest copy-protected Windows, and neither I nor my computer will accept them. Card readers that work in all Windows (& all Macs and Linux) are $10... |

I know that TIFF files used to be all 8-bit only, just like JPEG, but as I haven't shot TIFF for some time I couldn't tell you for sure. I think TIFF files are either 8 or 16 bit only, and since the D700 doesn't support 16 bit color depth, I'm betting what you're getting is an 8 bit file. If you have access to Photoshop, you should be able to open an image from the camera and get this bit of info from the File Info list.
