Default can't uplaod pictures on my pc

Ok I have an HP E427 camera. All of the sudden, I cannot upload pics from my sd card. I can view the pics on the camera, but I can't get them on the computer. My computer has a ton of free space. Please help, these are my halloween pics with my friends & I hope they are not lost! Also,what is formating a camera & should I do that?

how are you trying to transfer the pictures? directly from the camera or using a card reader?
