no background my os is vista...

I have a desktop, it runs with Vista. For some reason I dont have a background on my desktop. Ive selected several pictures to be my background and none work. All i have is black screen, however when i turn my laptop on the picture is there and then is replaced by black, and then i turn it off it does it inverse. What can I do to have a background?
