Default boot error

On an older compaq desktop computer. I get this messeage if i attempt to install windows 2000, xp, 2003 server ( any NT OS ). Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

I have tryed different cd rom drives and hard drives. No help. The error happens right after the system reboots for the first time in to the initinal setup. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

sounds like a bad hard disk.. run check disk on it from dos and fix any errors if possible.. I would start with formatting it first then run check disk
