hi tom, the Secure Digital format is also known as the SD format. i think almost all digital cameras use this now. are you familiar with the memory card? that's another term that one can use. the SD format means that you can store pictures and you have the option to either "lock" the files or not (to keep them from being mistakenly erased/deleted). IMHO, it's not a mere sales pitch. actually, i even think it's something that all digital camera manufacturers should disclose because it's already become an essential aspect for digital cameras
