I would say that both LCD and Plasma TVs can produce great picture quality under the right circumstances. In a dark room I prefer the Plasma TV over LCD since I get a more cinema like feeling from the slightly warmer colours from the Plasma. They both have their pros and cons and both technologies have come a long way in the last two years. To be fair I would say that the LCD tvs has increased in quality a lot but they started of from with the worst picture quality.
Without trying to say one is better than the other I suggest you go down to your electronics store and try to find a viewing situation that will be similar to your own and watch for yourself. I suggest a darker room so that you can see how deep black levels the TV can produce. If you are moving from your old bulky CRT TV this is probably the one thing you will notice a big difference from. The CRT TVs can produce outstanding black levels and great contrasts. Plasmas generally produce better black levels than LCDs but the latest generation of LCD TVs is closing that gap quickly.
