Are you sure about this? I thought the Live View function works in the auto settings. The focusing is the only thing that you should have to do manually with Live View. The exposure settings should all still work like normal I think. I will have to do a test when I get home.

I do agree with you that I don't think the Live View feature is a very good way to take most photos. Don't get me wrong, I use this feature a lot more than I thought I would, but not everyday shooting. I find it most useful in the studio when the camera is on a tripod, when shooting macros, or when I just can't seem to get the angle I want by holding the view finder up to my eye.

If you want to use the LCD screen all the time, I like Pgh's suggestion of spending the money on a different type of camera instead of a DSLR.
