You don't need to download from the iTunes Store. The iTunes client on the pc will quite happily fetch the music already stored on your pc, assuming it's in a recognised format, eg mp3, and synchronise it with the player.
So, don't let that be a limiting factor if the iPod fits your requirements otherwise. But don't just jump on the iPod bandwagon just because its there. There are loads of good and better players out there to choose from.
