Excerpt: The five stars are simply for ease of use. I've only backed up once with it so can't speak to the product's longevity. But it was right out of the box and synced up with my MacBook Pro in no time at all... easy!
Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy to use, Portable, Quiet
Summary: I've owned 3-4 other WD My Book drives for my PC and, except for one where the USB connector fell out, I've always been quite satisfied. When I needed a larger Time Machine drive for my MacBook Pro, a WD My Book was my first choice. It was a piece of cake to install and has been performing perfectly ever since. Any bit of technology I can forget about is great with me!
Summary: My second WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 3 TB. Fast and quiet. I also own a 1.5 TB and 2 TB, but different WD models (they look like little black boxes which don't stand up). They've been great drives. I deleted included software. I read of problems when ppl upgraded from Leopard to Lion, or was it Lion to Mavericks? I don't want to deal with 3rd party s/w which might not work w/Mac upgrades. I'm so used to doing my own backups. Great price too!
Summary: Simple "plug-N-play" with Mac OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite. The WD My Book for Mac 3TB drive was immediately recognized by my Retina Core i7 iMac and selected as the Time Machine back-up. Initial 325 GB back-up from the 3TB Fusion internal drive took 75 minutes for a transfer rate of 4.3 GB/minute or an average rate of 72 MB/ sec. Spot checks during the back-up showed peak transfer rates of up to 97 MB/sec.
Excerpt: I use it for OS X 10.7 Time Machine Backup and Manually Archived Music, Photos, Movies, Projects etc. I have an old (but very good) 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 so I can only use this HDD as USB 2.0 speeds. (fwiw I'd need OS X 10.8 for a plug-n-play 3.0 USB PCI card. So at this price it works fine for incremental Time Machine backups. The initial backup of 175GB of Data of course takes a while. I don't bother using the included WD software.
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, Easy To Set Up, Easy to use, High Capacity, Quiet
Summary: I use this drive with Time Machine on my Mac and it failed 2 weeks after I received it. Worked fine at first, but now it's not being detected at all on any computer. I usually go with Seagate for this reason, I don't know why I decided to try Western Digital again. I definitely would NOT recommend this hard drive.
Summary: I use the WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 3 TB to store and stream movies to my television. It works great, its not buggy or slow. I can stream a movie to my living room while simultaneously adding additional movies to it with no pauses or slow downs. It has made my life much easier. No more DVD's with scratches, dusty cases that take up space. Great product.
Summary: Great value here. Chugs along 24x7 with my iMac, quiet and fast. It's plug and play, comes with all the cables needed. As others have said, there is no real need to buy a Mac-specific drive, other than styling concerns, and the included software has no real value for me.
