Summary: I purchased this for the a little extra space and backing up my Windows 8 laptop using the file history option. Easy to install, the only utility I used from the WD Apps is the security lock for the drive which was also easy to install and configure grab the latest update from the web site would be the only thing I would add to this review.
Summary: Delivered on time and well packaged. Good steady hard drive that works very well meeting most of my expectations except the processor speed is a bit slow (however this was somewhat expected after reading other prior to purchasing).
WD My Passport Edge Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0
In the AmaZone..., Amazon
21 January 2013
Summary: I am not normally a fan of the so-called "smart-ware" on my portable drives or other storage devices, but for my use of this drive, I did find the WD Security Utility useful and easy to use in order to set password protection and hardware encryption to protect my files from unauthorized use or access. I also like the physical size -this is one of the smallest portable drives on the market.
Summary: I used to be a big fan of Seagate, but after several bad experiences with them I've leaned more towards Western Digital when possible. It seems that people tend to like or dislike various hard drive maker based on whether they got a bad drive or not more than any actual stats about hard drive lifespans/reliability.
3X Faster than USB 2.0 As It Claims, Decent Backup Software
27 September 2012
Summary: I have several WD portable drives, but this one is the thinnest by far, easily half the thickness of an older 640GB WD Elements drive I use. The specs say this drive is 3 times faster that USB 2 and they are correct. I ran a side-by-side test against my LaCie d2 Quadra hooked up as USB 2.0 on my work PC (For test data, I'm using an i5-2310 w/16GB ram, 128GB SSD & Caviar Black as an internal storage drive).
Summary: This drive is good and useful. However, my first impression upon handling the drive was that it felt cheap. It is light and plastic and uninspiring. Most importantly it does work and work well. In my testing this drive writes at around 12.38mb/s and it reads at about 17.73mb/s. Meaning: it moves files and it does so quickly. Installation was non-existent. I plugged it in and it worked. Nice and easy.
Summary: I had the chance to review this hard drive and I've tried out a few other WD drives. This one lives up to my expectations. You plug it in and it just works. You don't have to configure anything, just plug it and it starts to backup your software if you use the built in backup software or you can manually copy files over without using the backup software.
