Western Digital My Passport Edge 500GB review

APC
16 January 2013
  • Excerpt: Passport Edge is a new line of drives that includes both the excellent SmartWare backup software as well as hardware encryption. We’ve waxed lyrical about SmartWare in the My Passport review (left) and this is the same excellent software providing continuous backup of your important data. Hardware encryption keeps your files safe in case you lose your drive or it gets stolen. When it’s turned on nobody can unlock the files on the drive without the proper password.
  • Pros: Excellent software hardware encryption fast.
  • Cons: The design is a little bland.

WD My Passport Edge External Hard Drive Review

HotHardware
6 December 2012
  • Conclusion: The WD My Passport Edge is not exactly a speed demon, and its 5400RPM rating and SATA 3Gbps interface won’t wow anyone with raw performance. That’s not really a knock against the drive though, as it’s not particularly designed for high-end performance. It’s worth noting, however, that the unit does perform rather well with small random file transfers.
  • Pros: Compact size, Sufficient storage capacity, Includes solid backup software tools
  • Cons: Relatively modest performance

WD My Passport Edge 500GB Portable Hard Drive Review

Legit Reviews
20 November 2012
  • Excerpt: Back in 2011 we reviewed the WD My Passport Essential 500GB USB 3.0 portable hard drive and found it to be an amazing product that worked as advertised. Western Digital introduced its newest version of the My Passport line of portable hard drives with the debut of My Passport Edge in September 2012. The My Passport Edge still features 500 GB of storage and a USB 3.0 interface for fast read/write speeds, but it uses a faster hard drive and the enclosure has been updated.

Expert Review

ComputerShopper
15 November 2012
  • Conclusion: If, as we expect, the price on this model falls a bit down the line, this model will be a better buy, based on the extra warranty coverage alone. So watch those prices.
  • Pros: Speedy as (or slightly speedier than) most competing USB 3.0 drives, Three-year warranty is longer than most
  • Cons: Cheap-feeling plastic case, Slightly pricey

CHIP Online
3 March 2014
