Summary: I have been buying this brand of external drive for my macs for years. I have one that is 250 gig that is several years old and I've dropped it a few times. Still works great. I've never had one die (I know, "knock on wood").
Summary: I have dozens of TB of hard drives and Western Digital are my favorite, as none of them have ever died on me. This particular one is superb. I have several computers that have been accessing it constantly, reading and writing on it now for a few years and it just keeps plugging away. It is my main drive for recording and playing back television using EyeTV on a Mac, sort of like a DVR. This thing just keeps on plugging away.
Summary: At the time I bought this, I needed something with FireWire 800 to use Time Machine on a Macintosh. It's always been a bit of a premium for FireWire 800. But I trust the Western Digital name to store my data after 20 years in I.T. I will pay for peace of mind and known reliability and performance.
The star rating on this drive is sadly, deceiving!!!

Summary: I own an older mac OSX 10.4 and about to get a new MBP. I have owned this "WD My book Studio Drive" with the "SmartWare" on it for a year now and it has worked perfectly . Since my OSX doesn't have time machine and I really haven't gotten into automatic backups yet, so I never used this software. Yes it mounts and takes up one icon space on my desktop. Buhu!!
Summary: This is truly plug and play. It works seamlessly with my Mac and it's easy to retrieve information if I need to. When I can, I'll get another and cycle them every two weeks--one on the computer, one in the safe deposit box. Thank you, Western Digital!
Summary: For those mystified by the worthless and misleading VIDEOS 09 default drive label, it can only be reset to something sensible by installing the proprietary setup software from the virtual CD included on the MY BOOK drive (WD SmartWare.app > Your Computer icon > Install WD SmartWare > Install > Accept > SYSTEM PASSWORD (why?) > Quit [THEN...] start up WD SmartWare.app from Applications > MY BOOK icon > Settings > Setup Drive > Label).
