Summary: just what i needed for back up of multiple pictures. cd's actually degrade over years and this digital capture system will keep my photos crisp. also i place it in a safe or safe place and dont have to worry about my laptop being compremised
Excerpt: It's the almost the same size as a passport and hence the name. Very good for the consumer who needs a lot of portable memory on the go and is willing to pay the somewhat demanding price. It's built very well and the rubber feet will stop any vibrations on any surface. The drive is also incredibly silent and can only be heard if you put your ear right next to it while writing a lot of information.
Terrible. Requires too much thinking and is not reliable.

Summary: Bought the storage drive to save RAW files images of my son. Out of the box, it took a while to figure out how to format it to my MacBook Air. Then when I finally got it working, the drive would randomly disappear even though it was plugged in. Basically the thing is not reliable. I thought this is supposed to be an external storage drive (e.g. just plug and play). Definitely not this one. If I could take it back, I'd buy a different one.
Summary: I didn't buy my WD My Passport Essential from Amazon, but I'm passing along my review of it, anyway. As others have said, this product worked fine for me for a little while, but, several months after I bought it, my computer refused to recognize it. Unplugging it and plugging it back in again did absolutely no good. This product does nothing to enhance Western Digital's reputation. Stay away from it if you are smart and want a reliable external hard drive. I wish I had!
Summary: I have been an enthusiastic Amazon customer since 1998 and this is the first product to disappoint me. I must admit that a more tech savvy user might be able to make this product work, but I cannot. I purchased this external drive as a companion to a new PC purchase. I thought it would be a good idea to have a local back up. I can only report the following results: 1.
Summary: Two out of three of these that we purchased failed. I spent a week researching all the issues and problems; tried every single one of the suggested solutions. None of them worked. They all started out working fine, but after about 6 months, the problems started to happen. I lost all data on one of them, and the second one has failed to be recognized on one computer, but works fine on the other.
My second WD external drive... and possibly my last

Summary: I purchased this drive hoping to use as an additional back up. I loaded the software onto my laptop, and could see the external drive. However, I was immediately shown that an upgrade was required for my software. When i performed this upgrade, my computer froze and the external drive was no longer visible upon restart. When I called tech support, explained what happened, and asked why the drive was beeping, they were at a loss.
