Summary: As many other reviewers have mentioned, the major disappointment are the pre-installed backup softwares. I tried to backup and keep my computer in-sync with these, but the software is very very slow. Plus it basically backs up the data in a unreadable format, consuming space but being unusable unless you use the WD software. Again, since the software is slow, you are both tied to it, and lose space.
Summary: Kept turning off so had to call customer support. They said it was because of the 3.0 usb feature that it was malfunctioning. Told me to return it and get My passport for Mac. It was the same price on Amazon and works perfect.
Summary: I purchased this in April of 2011 and was excited to have an external hard drive to store music and photos so I could use them between my Mac and my PC. The drive only worked for 8 months. I'd rather spend the extra money and find something that will work long term.
Summary: I ordered this drive and about 40 days later it went to Western Digital for replacement. It just quit working while being accessed. Apparently according to Western Digital the on-board controller went south. Western Digital did replace it with a refurbished unit. The housing feels kind of cheap to me. I prefer the metal housed units better. Hope the replacement one keeps going.....I'll update the review if it dies also.
Could have been perfect - except for propritary cord
4 August 2011
Summary: Im biased because I have a pet peeve against proprietary USB cords with wierd shapes. This one has a "special" cord. Was out of town and couldnt find the USB cord and OF COURSE none of my spares fit because this one is a special propritary shape. And the presentation I needed to give was on the drive and I couldnt access it nor could I simply go get one of the standard USB cables to access it. You better carry a spare.
Software/drivers don't install, and updates can't be applied. Works as bare drive only.
27 June 2010
Summary: I plugged this drive in and the drivers refused to install on Windows 7 64-bit (with all the latest updates applied). I tried running the setup program directly from the drive as the instructions specified and as soon as the setup program runs, a dialog says "This application has encountered an unexpected error and is now exiting". This was a dialog from the WD software itself, NOT Windows, which indicates that the software had an unhandled error in the code.
Summary: I think I shouldn't have fallen for the blue color because that was the only factor that made me buy the Western Digital My Passport Essential, blue. The design is really wonderful and sleek. For most of the time I am unable to gather what is being backed up. The auto back up software installed itself and started work without any warnings. And the back up is done while I am working on a file. Really too irritating!
Summary: Well, I figured I'd wait to write my review on this, because I hoped this would be a great portable HDD. After owning this portable HDD for 5 months, I've come to realize that it is junk. Here's why: -USB Cable connection on HDD is small, thin, and loose. -The hard drive continuously disconnects from the PC at the slightest movement of the desk, or surface where the hard drive is placed on. -The USB port is not secured correctly and is flemsy.
