  • Summary: The WD ExtHD was refurbished but advertised as new. Software and manuals that should have come with It were missing. Had to hunt the web. After all of that it does work.

  • Summary: This Western Digital One terabyte USB hard drive is extremely durable yet unbelievably quiet, and its read/write speed is excellent. It is compact, about the size of a wallet, is handsomely designed, and so affordable that I bought two of them. Were it not for a couple of problems I would have given it five stars. The WD SmartWare feature, which emulates a CD drive seems to cause Windows Explorer to stop responding.

Great portable hard drive but with unwanted "features"

Amazon Customer, Amazon

  • Summary: I've owned about 10 WD Passport drives over the past 5 years, ranging from 100GB to this 1TB one. I basically upgraded for the increased capacity, and I was expecting the same great portable USB hard drive I've come to expect from Western Digital. And that's pretty much what I got. BUT ... This drive is different from previous Passport drives. First, it doesn't use a standard mini-usb cable, it uses a different type of usb cable/connector I've not seen before.

  • Summary: The drive is very small, cute and light weight, kudos to WD for that. The Cons are propriety mini USB cable is used, hence replacement is costly. Drive should always be horizontal in other positions it wont be detected. its still new so cant say about quality right now.

Bundled Software Unremoveable!

  • Summary: Ok so here's the deal. WD used to sell ordinary hard drives. Good prices. Decent reliability. Just hard drives like everyone else. I own two of the earlier generation 500GB drives and I love them. That was then. Now they think they're "adding value" by including software on the drive for backup and whatnot. Fine. On the 1TB drive, my Mac says over 660 MB is being used for this. You can not erase this data. It appears as a "virtual" CD on the Mac Desktop.

A really big hard drive

  • Summary: I purchased this drive because I have a huge photo and music library. I also thought that this drive could be a swap for an internal laptop drive. First the pros. It is one terabyte and fairly fast. I wish it was available with firewire as it seems to top out at about 12Mb/sec on transfers The cons. It has a different USB connector than the mini usb connector with earlier WD portable 2.5 inch drives. Now, that means I need yet another cable that to use this drive.

Good drive with a few annoying issues

Bob, Amazon
13 October 2009
  • Summary: General comments: First of all, this drive is really small, a little bit heavier, thicker and wider than the previous generation Passport but much much shorter. It has almost a square shape. Upon pluggin in, you will have 930 GB free space, which is not that bad. The driver is made of shiny plastic which is very finger print prone. The cable use the new micro-usb standard, so all of your previous Passport USB cable will not work.
