Worked for 2 1/2 years

Sean H., Newegg
30 June 2014
  • Summary: I thought I was saving money a couple of years back when I bought this, but all I ended up doing is costing myself money, time, frustration in trying to recover my important files. I really wish I'd gone elsewhere or just put together a mini-itx Linux machine.
  • Pros: Easy to set-up and configure
  • Cons: Slow operation. Hardware failure after about 2 1/2 years of moderate use. Ironically, the hardware that failed was not the drives themselves (which were configured in a Raid 1 format), but the built-in nic

Does what it's designed to do really well.

John A., Newegg
5 September 2011
  • Summary: Although listed as "2TB," the default configuration is really 1TB (on one drive) completely backed up (RAID) on another 1TB drive.
  • Pros: Purchased from NewEgg. Insanely easy to install, plugged into router and it showed up automagically on Win XP, Vista, 7, Ubuntu 8. Dual complexity, browser-based management is very clean. Email alerts work flawlessly. Built-in FTP server is useful for sharing. Works extremely well with my WDTV Li...
  • Cons: Some have thought the transfer rates are "slow." They are what I expected which is to say that it's not the same as writing from one hard drive to another on the same computer. But, it's not unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination. I've had a rare occasion (3-4 times in 8 months) where it ...

HDD 2 failed after 2 weeks

Lance P., Newegg
31 August 2011
  • Summary: After 2 weeks and very little usage (less than 3GB daily backups) HDD 2 has experienced multiple thermal alarms, SMART check failure, and the entire device as a whole is now operating in degraded mode (RAID 0). It'd be nice if this was well designed, but it's not.
  • Pros: Large capacity, relatively low price for a NAS
  • Cons: Caviar Green HDD's are junk, and this thing has two of them inside. It also has no fan, and thus gets REALLY hot during normal operation.

Not bad

Jason W., Newegg
29 August 2011
  • Summary: I would recomend this product WD is worth your money.
  • Pros: I have owned this 2TB My Book for a few years now. I had it mirrored but I now have a few more 2TB hard drives to back up my data and have set it back to a 2TB drive. It has always worked decent a little slow but not bad. I had the WD 1TB quit working on me and lost all my data but WD gave me thi...
  • Cons: It's a very big Hard drive case with 2 3.5 1TB hard drives. The new 2TB are one drive and alot smaller. This My Book I have to say has held up its end and I have even dropped this HD encloser and it still works awesome.

Mixed Feelings after a year

Christian F., Newegg
16 August 2011
  • Summary: I initially bought this product for my media storage and streaming. It works well for that. Between recorded media from my PC DVR and ripped movies as mp4's the device performs very very well.
  • Pros: Works right out the box. Large amount of storage for the price Web interface works ok not pretty but functional. Twonky server is well Twonky, it works as well as can be expected for the product. Thought this product would have been more of a plus but UPnP is not intuitive at all with most players.
  • Cons: Slow transfer speeds, I felt it the most on the initial load. Speeds are fine enough to handle many streams of HD media, we've had 5 1080p streams going through the house without an issue. Mionet is useless, least from my perspective every time I'm out and try and use it, it says the folders are ...

Quiet, quick, and efficient, though a bit slow.

EpicFail236, Amazon
21 June 2011
  • Summary: Okay, so as a slightly more advanced user, I have a review from what I feel is a different perspective from many of the reviews here, however, I think everyone should be able to take a few things from this.

Delivers as promised and performs its function

Rodney, Amazon
30 May 2011
  • Summary: Ordered the WD NAS drive to provide redundancy to home network. Storing lots of pictures, videos and music - backed up for protection against loss. Drive installed easily to multiple machines with the WD provided software, ie it created a mapped drive for you without needing the knowledge to do so.

Works OK but not the greatest

JMon, Amazon
26 April 2011
  • Summary: Works OK except when transfering files it will often stop and give an error message "Can not find device". Also the mac installation was "not", we still have not been able to locate the drive from our new power book, but that may be more of a networking issue.

If only it was faster

Jason Wishard, Amazon
2 March 2011
  • Summary: It was a breeze to setup and the web interface is beyond awesome! My only complaint is speed. I wish the network connection were faster over wireless.

Had to return.

Ziggy, Amazon
22 February 2011
  • Summary: Had to return this product. It installed okay, and seemed to perform well as a basic NAS, however any PC's connected to the network would no longer shutdown or restart without hanging then crashing. If the MBWE was disconnected, the PC's would shutdown and restart just fine.
