Excerpt: The Western Digital 1 TB My Book World is an excellent external storage drive. I set mine up on my network and have been mostly pleased. There is an issue I encountered with Windows 7 that makes it need some special handling -...
Excerpt: Needed a lot of storage for several computers for music, video, podcast, and pictures. All computers can access the drive through the network media players can use as default folders and you can access it on the Internet through mio net which is nice but not great better off using log me in or...
Summary: Bought this drive despite the reviews that it was slow because it seemed to be a very good value. My thought was that I'm only using it for backups and not for streaming or daily file access, so the slowness would not be an issue. I was wrong. This drive is too slow even for backups. It took over 24 hours to back up 133GB, which is a problem given that it's not often I'll have a 24 hr window to back up my PC (a notebook).
Summary: Works OK except when transfering files it will often stop and give an error message "Can not find device". Also the mac installation was "not", we still have not been able to locate the drive from our new power book, but that may be more of a networking issue. However one would assume that installation software would allow a mac to find the drive.
Summary: I agree with most of the reviewers that the mybook is a good value... it's not much more than the cost of the 2TB drives, and it works well... mapping Linux NFS, Mac/Windows shares easily. Also, it is slow. And it probably is the processor.... but I don't notice much since I'm mostly using it wirelessly, the wireless network is really the bottleneck. When direct-connected - you do feel the slowness.
Summary: I bought this to replace a 500GB WD hard disk; basically to use as a Time Machine Back Up drive for my mac book pro. After several attempts, the maximum data transfer speed i got was 5GB/hour. If you can live with this speed, then go for it.
Summary: The CD setup disc did not work. Luckily I was able to manually setup through windows without any problems. Once I did that it was a breeze to start moving my files of music to the device. It took half a day to transfer about 140 gigs. I have mine setup in RAID1. Now I can really begin to digitize my music collection and know that it is safe. Very happy with my purchase.
