Summary: I've had this drive for 10 months. Connected to iMac mid-2010 running latest OS X 10.8.5. Time Machine handles all the backing up. I've partitioned the drive in 2 halves. 1st half for back ups. 2nd half for other stuff. The drive has been running in the back ground without any issues. I tried to encrypt the drive at first, but I didn't realize it would take days for the drive to reformat itself. So I quite it after a couple hours.
Be Careful When Ordering From Beach Camera - They'll Likely Send a USB 3.0 Instead of FireWire 800!
31 August 2013
Summary: Be careful when ordering from third party like Beach Camera - they will send a USB 3.0 instead of FireWire 800 and if your computer is several years old and you don't have USB 3.0 - either you use USB 2.0 or you send it back to third party like I did. Somewhere there was a mix up in communication. Very disappointed - did not receive FireWire 800 like I wanted. Returned to Beach Camera and wasted a lot of time!
Summary: I'm usually a LaCie guy for storage, but this item is really good for the money, and the performance is there. The biggest myth out there is that you need Thunderbolt to have fast read-write speeds; but if you're not moving data between SSDs, you're not going to even remotely approach Thunderbolt's 10Gb/s speeds.
Summary: For those who need Firewire or USB for Macs (without Thunderbolt), this drive is a great value. I'm getting "good enough" performance from the FireWire 800 port. I'm using it for Time Machine backups.
Summary: Chose it firewire to backup with time machine my iMac 27 i5 3.1 computer. It is faster than usb2 my mac does not have usb3, the new one does. Also the color is silver aluminium just like the mac. I was able to install an alternate partition also on it if i want to boot from it to give my mac maintenance. The size is more than adequate due to the fact that my iMAc has a 1TB HDD. Had a logic board failure at seven months of use, and this baby restored my mac to new.
Summary: On my desk I have 3 different generations of the WD My Book products and this one is my favorite of the three. It is the most quiet, although it's predecisor was quiet as well, but I do like that they have made the light less obnoxious. I have had to put tape over the large lights that covered their previous devices as in a dark room it is so bright and constantly flashing as it is running backups. The Studio 3 works great as a backup drive.
Summary: In the past 15 years, the only brand of external drive that's been trouble-free for me, has been Western Digital (WD). My iMac's Time Machine drive for the past 4 years was a 500GB portable WD drive with a Firewire 800 connection, which has worked perfectly. But as my 1TB iMac hard drive has filled up, I knew I'd hit the wall with the 500GB drive size.
Summary: I work professional audio and video, and this little thing just solved EVERY storage problem I had. Works fast and perfect. I still do not recommend to use only one external HD as a backup, since you should always have 2 backups (not counting the internal HD). If I had known this product better when I bought (last Black Friday) I would have bought 3!!!
