Almost a miss..

Summary: At least the drive works.. but the software is supposed to be what you are paying for. the aluminum housing is great and because of that and the fact that it works for my needs I give it 3 eggs.
Pros: I received this as part of the newegg eggxpert review program.
Summary: I'll cut to the chase. This would have been a 5-star review, but as I learned, this drive might not be for you if you need a Firewire bootable backup. If this is a concern, read on... I bought this drive intending to partition it into two 1TB partitions- one for a bootable backup and one for a Time Machine backup. I do my bootable backups with the application SuperDuper, which is outstanding for this purpose.
Summary: I have two other WD My Book external drives. I purchased this one because it would connect directly to the Firewire 800 slot in my Mac. Although it is said to be pre-formatted for Mac, the one delivered to me was not. My Mac could not recognize the WD My Book Studio 800 at all. After reading more reviews and the help forum at WD's website, I ran across a reviewer who said that the drive might work if it was connected to a USB 2 port.
Summary: Works well, quiet and unobtrusive. The main reason I purchased it was for the firewire 800 and password protected. Firewire works fine BUT while there is software for the password , it does NOT work. "Password protection with hardware-based encryption" appears in the main page description but on installation all it says is "WD SmartWare version (v184.108.40.206) is current".. Current it may be but it don't work. Very disappointed - the HD was bought for that purpose.
Summary: I got this through the Amazon Vine programme. When it arrived there was no UK plug - only a 2 pin Euro pin. I contacted Vine, who very kindly said that, seeing as there was a problem with the product, I didn't need to review it. However, it seems that it wasn't an error - this product just comes without a UK plug. Which is very irritating. (I found an old WD hard drive and the power lead worked) That's the reason I'm giving it three stars.
Lion issues, potentially fiddly setup and no manual switch for RAID setup

Summary: This drive arrived today and I've had a number of issues with it already, although I have no idea how the drive operates in practise yet. I bought this drive purely for its ability to work as a mirrored RAID. My plan is to use it with my Mac and to store home video on it (the mirroring working as an automatic backup since I don't trust hard drives with my memories!) First impressions: nice packaging but the unit itself does feel flimsy on the sides.
Summary: At first sight the 'WD - My Book - Studio - External Hard Drive' is a nice looking piece of kit. It packs a whopping 1TB of storage space and is dead easy to set up and get cracking (Mrs Wolf is loading in the last five year's holiday snaps as I write!) Transfer speeds via the Firewire 800 and USB cables are fast. So far so good but there are buts.
