Be cautious....

Audrey Moore "miss audrey", Amazon
12 March 2014
  • Summary: I was told after I bought this from a friend who worked at APPLE this was the worst drive to buy. It died (no Power) and I've lost everything. Western Digital sent me a new power source. Still nothing. They are making me pay for date recovery which can cost up to $1000. They will replace this s*** drive with one exactly like it. Do not risk it! WD restored my data to a refurbished replacement drive. I paid nothing. Good customer service occurred.

WD My Book Studio 3 TB Firewire 800 on an iMac 27" i7 Review

Dale Adkins, Amazon
28 March 2013
  • Summary: This is a nice product so far, I hooked it up to my iMac and "Only loaded the Turbo Driver and not the software!" There was no need to reformat the drive because it already formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it already had a full 3 TB ready to use. I ran a speed test on it using Disk Speed Test by: Blackmagicdesign and found that it performed well. The speeds were: write: 68 MB/s and read: 61 MB/s, not quite 80 MB/s but close.

Wish it had a power button

J. Rehm, Amazon
28 June 2012
  • Summary: I loved the fact that I didn't have to format it to work with my imac, but I just wish it had a power button. Otherwise, it's a good choice for mac.

Warning if you need a bootable backup...

Dave K, Amazon
8 May 2012
  • Summary: I'll cut to the chase. This would have been a 5-star review, but as I learned, this drive might not be for you if you need a Firewire bootable backup. If this is a concern, read on... I bought this drive intending to partition it into two 1TB partitions- one for a bootable backup and one for a Time Machine backup. I do my bootable backups with the application SuperDuper, which is outstanding for this purpose.

A Difficult Product to Get Working

AnotherAmateur's Channel, Amazon
21 January 2012
  • Summary: I have two other WD My Book external drives. I purchased this one because it would connect directly to the Firewire 800 slot in my Mac. Although it is said to be pre-formatted for Mac, the one delivered to me was not. My Mac could not recognize the WD My Book Studio 800 at all. After reading more reviews and the help forum at WD's website, I ran across a reviewer who said that the drive might work if it was connected to a USB 2 port.

Amazing, a HD... With a soundtrack no less!

Amazon Customer, Amazon
12 September 2008
  • Summary: Blah, blah, blah. It is a hard drive. Interesting note, however, it is noisy. Time to turn on the power saving features that suspend HDs if you want to be able to think over the dull noise.

does the job but...

naxxarmike, Amazon
17 January 2013
  • Summary: Works well, quiet and unobtrusive. The main reason I purchased it was for the firewire 800 and password protected. Firewire works fine BUT while there is software for the password , it does NOT work. "Password protection with hardware-based encryption" appears in the main page description but on installation all it says is "WD SmartWare version (v1.3.3.8) is current".. Current it may be but it don't work. Very disappointed - the HD was bought for that purpose.

Great performance but annoying light

Telémaco, Amazon
4 December 2011
  • Summary: This drive has shown a great performance plugged to my iMac using firewire. But it has a white light that never goes off. Even when the drive is not mounted, it keeps blinking. Very annoying.

Where's the flippin plug?

Chris Widgery, Amazon
16 October 2011
  • Summary: I got this through the Amazon Vine programme. When it arrived there was no UK plug - only a 2 pin Euro pin. I contacted Vine, who very kindly said that, seeing as there was a problem with the product, I didn't need to review it. However, it seems that it wasn't an error - this product just comes without a UK plug. Which is very irritating. (I found an old WD hard drive and the power lead worked) That's the reason I'm giving it three stars.

Lion issues, potentially fiddly setup and no manual switch for RAID setup

A. Till, Amazon
12 October 2011
  • Summary: This drive arrived today and I've had a number of issues with it already, although I have no idea how the drive operates in practise yet. I bought this drive purely for its ability to work as a mirrored RAID. My plan is to use it with my Mac and to store home video on it (the mirroring working as an automatic backup since I don't trust hard drives with my memories!) First impressions: nice packaging but the unit itself does feel flimsy on the sides.
