The My Book line goes to sleep FAST.
Delbert Botz, Amazon
22 June 2014
Summary: The My Book line goes to sleep FAST. If you're using it to store graphics or video that you're using in a program like Photoshop or Adobe Premiere, you'll constantly have to re-wake the drive. Someone told me this is because this line of drives is primarily intended for storage.
Summary: This is my second WD My Book Studio. I have been pleased so far with WD drives in general and with this drive in particular. I fired it up and it shows no bad sectors. BUT… you should be aware that the drive ships with ESSENTIALLY NO WARRANTY. When I registered this drive on the WD website, the warranty expiration shows as 6/30/2014, i.e. 77 days from now!. And the status shows as "Out of Region.
Summary: I was told after I bought this from a friend who worked at APPLE this was the worst drive to buy. It died (no Power) and I've lost everything. Western Digital sent me a new power source. Still nothing. They are making me pay for date recovery which can cost up to $1000. They will replace this s*** drive with one exactly like it. Do not risk it! WD restored my data to a refurbished replacement drive. I paid nothing. Good customer service occurred.
Summary: Firewire and USB is great. I have both FireWire 800 and 400 so connections can be an issue. I'm using as a travelling backup (Superduper) for 4 macs. My mom and I exchange backup drives. Currently having problems-my 20" Imac Core duo won't startup from this drive. According to the information on the net, not all external WD drives will boot Macs (not surprising since I'm backing up both PowerPC and Intel Macs, running OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.8).
Summary: I bought this specifically to use as a Firewire boot drive for an iMac. I couldn't get it to work (yes, I reformatted the drive as a single GUID partition). I tried to boot a MacBook Pro from it just in case there was something wrong with the iMac; wouldn't boot that one either. I was able to boot both machines from another Firewire drive. If you're just using it as a mass storage device, it seems to be fine.
WD My Book Studio 3 TB Firewire 800 on an iMac 27" i7 Review
Dale Adkins, Amazon
28 March 2013
Summary: This is a nice product so far, I hooked it up to my iMac and "Only loaded the Turbo Driver and not the software!" There was no need to reformat the drive because it already formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) it already had a full 3 TB ready to use. I ran a speed test on it using Disk Speed Test by: Blackmagicdesign and found that it performed well. The speeds were: write: 68 MB/s and read: 61 MB/s, not quite 80 MB/s but close.
Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB FireWire 800 External Hard Drive
26 March 2012
Summary: a back-up maxtor turbo drive of 3+ years finally died on me a week ago (none of the 1TB firewire 800 drives that i've owned so far ever lasted longer than 2+ years). so i urgently needed a replacement (1 TB worth of valuable data was didn't have a back-up) and i decided to try this new model of Western Digital My Book Studio 1 TB since i'd already had two similar earlier versions of this drive and, overall, i was satisfied with their performance.
Summary: I'll cut to the chase. This would have been a 5-star review, but as I learned, this drive might not be for you if you need a Firewire bootable backup. If this is a concern, read on... I bought this drive intending to partition it into two 1TB partitions- one for a bootable backup and one for a Time Machine backup. I do my bootable backups with the application SuperDuper, which is outstanding for this purpose.
