Summary: I've spent over 35 hours last week trying to figure out how to use this drive as a Boot Drive for my iMac (7,1). I searched the internet and applied the 'solutions' I found. I've reset the SMC and the PRAM many times along with reinstalling Snow Leopard and using different cables. I've left it off for 18 hours and many times have repaired both permissions and disk, yet still nothing. I cloned drives that do work with CCC and still no go.
Summary: I bought this product to backup my computer because I was going to take it in to apple and I was pretty sure they would need to replace the HDD. Well I ended up getting really busy and never got my computer in. I finally had some time about 6 months after I bought it, and had already backed up some stuff on it, and wanted to run another backup. When I went to go plug in the hard drive, nothing. It just stopped working.
Summary: This drive worked fine at first, but the 2nd or 3rd time I tried to set it up there was a spark when plugging it in. I've tried plugging it in before plugging it into the wall, and it occasionally still makes a small sparking sound, often visible. I'm scared now to use it, am not sure if anyone else has had this problem. For a 3TB drive, this is just unacceptable.
Summary: Arrived today and worked fine in my Macbook Pro, I copied over a 2gb movie to the drive without a problem. Moved the drive across the room to my Mac Mini and the drive did not power on, moved it back to my Macbook Pro and it still won't turn on. What a piece of junk.
Summary: Very nice looking hard drive, unfortunately within 6 months it up the ghost. I was mainly using it for pictures and home movies during a move. I started getting error messages regarding my iphoto library being unstable and within the span of a couple of days, despite madly trying to back up my photos and movies, the hard drive could no longer be mounted. There was no antecedent drop or other physical damage.
Summary: This product has been a pain in my neck since about the one month mark. I use this to store files and it will constantly "fall asleep" and not be accessible. For some reason it will show up in my disk utility on my mac however will not "mount" and despite having power to it this unit is basically a useless brick that may as well be a doorstop. I have tried on my imac, macbook, ps3 and wd tv live and none of these can access it.
Summary: I too got a bad unit. It worked for about 3 weeks and then was totally dead. Not even a light to show there was power. It just disappeared from my Mac Finder and Time Capsule was not backing things up. Once I figured out it was the external hard drive, I contaced Amazon and they were great at making arrangements to send it back. Now I have to go shopping for a new drive. It probably won't be another My Book. One thing I am worried about.
Summary: I really wanted to like the WD "My Book Studio" 3TB drive. It's in a handsome metal case, it has both Firewire and USB ports, it's fast and it's very quiet. In fact, however, I ended up returning the drive to Amazon after a week or so. There are two Firewire ports on the back of the drive, because Firewire is supposed to be daisy-chainable.
Summary: Bought one of these at a local retail store. Brought it home to find that it was defective: no electrical power reaching the unit. Called WD's tech support, confirmed that it was defective, brought it back to the store and exchanged it. Just unpacked the second one (last one the store had) and found that it, too is a powerless paperweight. Tomorrow I'll return to the store, get a refund and try a different brand.
