Fast, quiet thunderbolt alternative
7 August 2014
Summary: It's become more difficult to find FireWire drives - especially quality drives like WD. I needed a quick external drive for my wife's iMac - she works in photography, so transfer rate is a big issue. Her mac doesn't have USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt drives are still relatively expensive. This firewire drive, while not quite as speedy a thunderbolt peripheral would be, is fast enough for her to work directly from the drive.
Summary: The My Book line goes to sleep FAST. If you're using it to store graphics or video that you're using in a program like Photoshop or Adobe Premiere, you'll constantly have to re-wake the drive. Someone told me this is because this line of drives is primarily intended for storage.

Summary: Working great so far, this is a vast improvement over my previous WD 2TB My Book Studio, which crashed and lost most of my data, and was never truly Mac friendly, even though it had firewire, the utility packages on the WD site where mostly geared to windows.
Summary: If you have large files to back up, such as home videos, this is a great way to do it. This HD has FireWire, so it works well with a Mac and has good data transfer speed. I have several of these and love them.
Summary: This is my second WD My Book Studio. I have been pleased so far with WD drives in general and with this drive in particular. I fired it up and it shows no bad sectors. BUT… you should be aware that the drive ships with ESSENTIALLY NO WARRANTY. When I registered this drive on the WD website, the warranty expiration shows as 6/30/2014, i.e. 77 days from now!. And the status shows as "Out of Region.
Summary: I was told after I bought this from a friend who worked at APPLE this was the worst drive to buy. It died (no Power) and I've lost everything. Western Digital sent me a new power source. Still nothing. They are making me pay for date recovery which can cost up to $1000. They will replace this s*** drive with one exactly like it. Do not risk it! WD restored my data to a refurbished replacement drive. I paid nothing. Good customer service occurred.
Summary: Bought this to use as a Time Machine backup and it did a good job for a short period. Yesterday it would not power up even though power supply tested OK. If it weren't under warranty I'd open it up and install the drive into another housing (in my experience it's typically the enclosure electronics that malfunction, not the actual drive), but to do so voids the warranty, so if you want your data back you have to pay WD to retrieve it.
