A very portable drive

Michael B., Newegg
26 October 2012
  • Summary: 1. Backup software. There are numerous Backup software solutions for PCs. I prefer to just "drag and drop" files from my PC to my various external drives (I own many drives from different vendors). The down side is you must manage the backups yourself (and remember to do them periodically).
  • Pros: The WD My Passport 1TB hard drive is a high capacity, good performance, and very portable solution to transport or backup your files. 1. S.M.A.R.T. data. Model: WDC WD10JMVW-11S5XS0 Firmware: 01.01A01 LBA: 1953458176 Cache size: 8192 KB RPM: 5400 SATA Gen2 3.0 Gb/s: Supported 2. Very portable. Th...
  • Cons: 1. The drive inside the enclosure is SATA, however from what I've read, WD packages the SATA/USB bridge directly on the drive controller board (note: I did not open the enclosure to verify this). This means the SATA/USB bridge is not a separate card that can be removed from the drive. The up side...

They DO work on Windows 7!

Anonymous, Newegg
2 January 2010
  • Summary: I don't know why this product is getting knocked down so much. I have two these running over eSATA on Windows 7 RC 64 Bit just fine. I'm also using the Rosewell 2 x eSATA port Add-In-Card for connectivity. I notice no connectivity issues, and the heat output is typical of any 1TB drive.
  • Pros: -eSATA -Firewire -USB -1TB Storage -Good design, can lay flat or upright.
  • Cons: None

Great for me

Charles N., Newegg
2 January 2010
  • Summary: My son has two of these and I have one. With about 2 years of service across the three, we have had no problems. The eSATA option is nice to keep USB ports free, but the transfer rate we typically get from the drives (just under 30 MB/s sustained reads) does not require bandwidth beyond USB 2.
  • Pros: Price/capacity, eSATA
  • Cons: Other consumers have had problems, but not me, other than the annoying need to properly sequence power up when rebooting a Windows XP machine.

Meets requirements

Joseph K., Newegg
24 September 2009
  • Summary: Nice warranty, but would you really consider returning a drive that failed and is loaded with personal info that you have backed up?
  • Pros: Immediately recognized by both Windows XP(SP3) and Vista HP(SP1) on a dual boot system. With the Western Digital Drive Manager installed the drive can be turned off with a touch of the button on the back side of the drive, a nice feature if you don't plan on using the autobackup and autosync (tri...
  • Cons: The three years limited warranty by WD is better than most if you register, but I'll pass on this rather than give WD all of the personal info required for registration. Why WD???

One Great Buy

Fermin R., Newegg
4 September 2009
  • Summary: Its a solid drive. I have recommended it to friends when it comes to performance, but, it is rather pricey when up against other contenders. But nevertheless, I would recommend the drive any day. One of the best buys Ive ever had.
  • Pros: Transfer Rates! Theyre fast, I use both Firewire and USB, Desktop and Laptop respectively, and they are not slow whatsoever. I keep all my music on the HDD and I can listen to it for hours. Has a built in Fan, most people don't know its there, but it operates very quietly whenever the heat starts...
  • Cons: Not a 1Tb. Really wish I would've gone with the 1Tb because now I only have 50gigs left on my 500, and I've had it for only 8 months now. The info light in the front can tend to get rather annoying at night, its really bright, I just usually cover it with a shirt or something when I go to sleep l...
