Summary: I have been using this for a couple years now and it is still working as the day I opened it. Big con for this product is the backup software the comes with it. The software is horrible and you get annoying options to purchase features in the software.
Summary: This is my 2nd. First suffered a drive problem - which can be expected after 5-years. (Make sure you back-up your back-ups on DVD). Installation was easy. Establishing backup plans also easy, as is file retrieval. My only issue is the Backup application crashes due to my 64-bit OS. It does re-initialize itself and the crash does not occur frequently enough to be a major issue.
Summary: I have had this drive for about 8 months. I bought it because it was significantly cheaper than a 1 TB internal drive. I gave it 3 stars because mine happens to work. I have not had serious performance issues with the drive, although many other people have, including my aunt -- hers became unusable after 2 weeks. The drive is supposed to work on USB, firewire, and eSATA. I can confirm that it works with the first two connections, but have never tried it with the third.
Summary: This is a great product.I use mine via an e-sata cable and its more than sufficient storage however, every so often the drive goes into suspension once it is not being accessed and periodically it starts up again momentarily freezing my system for 3-5 secs then everything is back to normal.
Summary: i just purchased this drive from Costco, for my apple Imac, 24 inch ( 2008 model). It would not connect or be recognized when i tried the firewire 400 method..the drive did not even show up on my desktop. I then tried using USB2, and it connected up no problem. I then reformatted the Drive for Mac, and it seemed to work fine with USB2.
Summary: I brought this refurbished, so basically "you get what you paid for." The inputs in the back were not properly installed, as some ports were being blocked by the outer case of the hard drive. This sets the whole system off as certain things are not properly aligned. For example, the power on button has an issue as it needs you to constantly play with it to get it to turn on. To be fair, when hard drive work, its a great steal.
Summary: The Memeo backup software included on this My Book is seriously outdated. Do not install it! Instead, do the following: 1. Go to memeo.com and install the latest version of Memeo AutoBackUp Standard. 2. Use the same software product key that is on the quick install guide of this My Book. You will save a lot of time!!
Summary: OK, from what I've read, you're going to be better off with the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme. Why? Because from the research I've done, the backup software that comes with the Western Digital My Book Home Edition is only a 30 day trial version. I had a hard time finding thorough reviews of the latest hard drives (October 1, 2008). The Western Digital and Seagate models I've mentioned are pretty equally ranked.
The drive can be powered up after automatic standby

Summary: As another reviewer mentioned that the drive goes power down state and the drive letter in windows explorer just disappear and nothing can bring it back until recycle the power up/down. He also mentioned the reset button does not work. But actually, the reset button on the back does work. The correct way is to push the button and hold it for a few seconds until you see the front light started brinking again.
