Terribly spotty.

Phung T., Newegg
25 August 2015
  • Summary: I usually buy western digital for my hard drives, but never again will I get an external drive from them, because I've heard similar issues with other people who have gotten MyBooks.
  • Pros: Holds data.... If you can access it.
  • Cons: One of the worst pieces of hardware that I've ever had. Randomly prevents my computer from shutting down. (solution: Unplug.) Randomly prevents my computer from starting up. Sometimes reads, sometimes doesn't.

D. T. Harker "Dan", Amazon

  • Summary: Believe it or not, I have 9 external drives, from 500 MB to 4 TB, and all but 3 are Western Digital My Books. They are very reliable.

A very portable drive

Michael B., Newegg
26 October 2012
  • Summary: 1. Backup software. There are numerous Backup software solutions for PCs. I prefer to just "drag and drop" files from my PC to my various external drives (I own many drives from different vendors). The down side is you must manage the backups yourself (and remember to do them periodically).
  • Pros: The WD My Passport 1TB hard drive is a high capacity, good performance, and very portable solution to transport or backup your files. 1. S.M.A.R.T. data. Model: WDC WD10JMVW-11S5XS0 Firmware: 01.01A01 LBA: 1953458176 Cache size: 8192 KB RPM: 5400 SATA Gen2 3.0 Gb/s: Supported 2. Very portable. Th...
  • Cons: 1. The drive inside the enclosure is SATA, however from what I've read, WD packages the SATA/USB bridge directly on the drive controller board (note: I did not open the enclosure to verify this). This means the SATA/USB bridge is not a separate card that can be removed from the drive. The up side...

Failed in 2 months

Donnie K., Newegg
20 October 2011
  • Pros: Fantastic while it worked. Loved the eSata connection.
  • Cons: Drive failed at about 65 days. Well outside NewEgg's time to legally care.

Never again.

Mathew B., Newegg
26 June 2011
  • Summary: I'm never buying WD again, they're unreliable.
  • Pros: It does what it's supposed to.
  • Cons: It is always on. I hold the power button till it stops, let it sit for an hour, and it still produces heat. I need to plug it directly into the wall instead of a power strip. If the power is interrupted it goes into some sort of lockdown mode and won't mount.

Lost everything!

Good S., Newegg
8 June 2011
  • Pros: None known.
  • Cons: Our computer was crashing, so we downloaded everything on the hard drive and unplugged it from the computer. After erasing everything off of our main computer we plugged in the HD and it didn't work. We were later told that this is a common issue with Western Digital. If you just unplug the HD fr...
