Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex pro 500 GB Review
24 December 2010
Excerpt: The use of an external storage has become more of an everyday requirement for many not just for their business, but also as a source of pleasure. As other hardware such as media players, consoles and even routers come with a USB port which lets you use external storage not only as a source of movies, backing up data but also the best way to carry around large portions of data.
Summary: Since external hard drives are generally limited by the bottlenecks of the transfer technology, it's nice to see an approach that won't leave you stranded when something better comes along. However, some may find it difficult to stomach paying $149 for the Seagate GoFlex Pro, then paying another $30 to buy the USB 3.0 connection. Once Seagate starts selling the drive with the USB 3.0 dock included, it will make more financial sense.
Pros: Innovative connecting system, Stylish design, Desktop stand included with capacity meter, Three-year warranty
Cons: Connectors add to cost, Not the fastest drive
Summary: Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.
Pros: Interchangeable "personality cables" add value in versatility and speed; inexpensive; works with Mac and Windows OS; three-year warranty; Memeo backup software included.
Cons: Three-year warranty, compared with five years for older FreeAgent drives (still better than most portables hard drives).
Summary: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro is one model in Seagate's refresh of its portable hard drive line (desktop versions are available, too). The new GoFlex system this drive is a part of encompasses drives of varying colours and capacities, connection modules, and accessories.
