Failed in its sole purpose
Mudslide Matt, Amazon
9 January 2016
Summary: I bought one in a national chain office supply store. It was easy to use and set up. I bought it as an emergency backup for an HP laptop. When the HP failed, I patted myself on the back. But the Seagate failed too. In other words, it failed in its intended purpose.
I used this drive as my TimeMachine backup drive on ...
12 October 2015
Summary: I used this drive as my TimeMachine backup drive on my MacBook for three years and it just failed today. It took about 20 minutes to appear mounted on my desktop and then I got a message reading "OS X can't repair the disk 'TimeMachine.
Summary: This hard drive fell 8 inches out of my hand to land gently on a well carpeted floor. It barely hit the ground hard at all. And it doesn't work anymore. I would expect more durability from a "Portable" external hard drive.
Summary: If you already purchased this device, be extra careful when handling it. If you have not, be extra curious on finding out how reliable other portable HDD work in the long run.
Pros: 500 GB is quite a good amount to back up entire laptops or use it as means to transport Video files from one system to another. It is very hard to fill even if using to rip DVDs the transfer data speeds are acceptable for a USB 2.0 connection. I was able to copy the image of my failing HDD and re...
Cons: After working a little bit less than a month this drive stopped being visible in my computers. Literally I lost the data that was backed up there. Good news for me is that this was the back up, but my original data is still available. I sent this item for replacement with NEWEGG. A replacement it...
Summary: It was for my work and it required an admin access to mount it to the notebook. This is not a negative but just the way my company works. Afterwards, it worked fine. As of today, it stopped showing up on my work notebook.
Summary: Hard drive was working great for a month, but then suddenly, it died completely. I never dropped it once. Their warranty department is terrible. Seagate was of no use. I shipped it off for repair/replacement, but they returned it without repairing or replacing it.
great drive, still problematic firmware / sleep mode with Mac
27 December 2009
Summary: I so want to like this drive. It's sleek, sturdy, indeed fast. Unfortunately it still suffers from the long-documented Seagate issue of the drive going to sleep either before your computer does (it does not properly sync to the drive sleep time of OS X) or not properly waking up or sleeping with the...
Summary: My freeagent died after 6 months. I wanted to get my data off the drive and had to void my warranty by pulling it apart, thus making it ineligible for a refund. When I pulled it apart, I realised that the port that the mini USB cable plugs into had broken loose.
Summary: VERY unhappy after saving, routinely, from a 64 bit desktop (for weeks) and THEN discovered it won't transfer to 64 bit laptop. Now I must get another type, another brand. They NEED to get this device updated!
