Beware if you have Windows 7
22 March 2014
Excerpt: It looks nice, but it's a big disappointment. It doesn't work right with Windows 7. There's no way to set it to automatically back up your computer. You have to do so manually each time. It isn't as simple as plugging it in either. Granted I'm not a computer wiz, but I needed to contact my IT professional to set it up for me. Only after much research did we discover from other online tech chats that the problem is that it simply does not work right with Windows 7.
Excerpt: POOR PACKAGEING FROM STAPLES ON LINE!! DRIVE AND SOFTWARE WORKS WITH XP IT WAS NEEDED TO WORK WITH WIN 7 IT WILL NOT WORK WITH THE HOME OR PRO VERSION OF WIN 7 NO HELP FROM SEAGATE E MAIL YET GOING TO RETURN IT SOON. DO NOT NEED A PAPER WEIGHT..
Pros: High Capacity, Portable, Quiet
Cons: Difficult To Use, No Power Switch, Unreliable
Excerpt: I carefully examined the packaging of to see what it would do and what operating system it would require. It says it will back up your computer, but it won't really do that. I am part of a peer-to-peer network. That is there are "shared file folders on my computer." The software that comes with this "back-up" unit will not back up any shared files on my computer.
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, High Capacity
Cons: No Peer To Peer Backup, Poor customer support
Excerpt: I have had this for approximately 4 months and it was working great and then it died. I am on a network at work and my computer was going VERY slow and almost was in a safe mode on Windows 7. The I.T. guys found disk errors (corrupted sectors). The one good thing is that it stayed alive long enough for me to transfer my files to another computer. I am a graphic artist and deal with a lot of huge files and I understand that you take your chances with these drives.
Pros: Attractive Design, Easy To Set Up, Easy to use, High Capacity
Summary: It does not perform anywhere near to expectations. When backing-up its speed is hardly any faster than my previous usb2 version and yes I am using a new USB3 slot with the usb cable supplied by Seagate. When I put the problem to Seagate they said it wasn't their product, it must be something to do with my computer, I should try it on another computer. Not very helpful.
Summary: This is a fantastic drive with great read/write speeds, however, it disconnects every couple of hours or so. I've read online and I'm not the only person with this problem. I've done all kinds of suggestions, changing settings, changing the cable, etc. Nothing worked. I've already filled the drive with more things than I can back up to other places so I cannot return the drive. Disappointed.
