Excerpt: ... this adapter does not work with the 4TB Backup Plus desktop drive for Mac by Seagate. I am not sure which drives will work - one should probably contact B&H prior to ordering. B&H was most kind in offering return postage for these items.
Excerpt: Have 4 and all 4 have connection problems. Some times they connect and other times won't. On one the connector came loose and went inside the unit. I am sorry I bought them. They are fragile not rugged like the other type connection type plugs.
Summary: Beware of this drive. Drive failed after first week of use. Drive would not spin up although base was powered. Needless to say the eleven laptops that were backup'ed on it will be redone. Company agreed to replace drive after several phone bumps but at a cost. Learned a lesson on this one.
Summary: Despite what the name says, you should not use this for backup of important files. The enclosure is designed with little functionality in mind. The vents don't do much to help cool the drive. If I used it for backing up files, I would expect drive failure within a year.
Pros: A lot of storage at very fast speeds with USB 3.0
Summary: I attached the STAE129 with Seagate Backup Plus Desktop 4TB disk (STCA4000300) which surprisingly didn't work as a thunderbolt bootable disk unit. I tried to boot a LaCie thunderbolt rugged drive and it works fine - therefore I feel the problem lies with the Seagate thunderbolt adapter rather than the Mac or hard disk. You will be dis-appointed if you want to use this a thunderbolt bootable disk.
Summary: When I connected it up to my new HP PC it resulted in me not being able to boot the machine into Windows. Plus after several attempts to identify the problem I had to recover Windows because I could not even boot the machine once this unit was disconnected. My Amazon Supplier did not have any knowledge of this product so I contacted Seagate Support and they requested I run the Seagate Seatools utility to check the unit.
Summary: Plugged in the mains unit but drive failed to power up. Checked the mains unit with a meter and it produced the required power ok. Drive did not seem particularly robust in construction. Disappointing, so returned for refund.
