Summary: I bought this from Office Depot on sale, and by the time it stop responding (about 2 months later), it was past their return period. I hooked it up to an older machine running Windows XP, a few weeks after I bought it. It was clumsy, with two USB plugs. The software was awful, and non-sensical. It didn't respond to much of anything. I know this is to be expected from most hard drives software though. I tried to manually upload everything I wanted.
Summary: I've had this drive for several years and it has worked well. I bought it specifically for the hardware encryption feature. Unfortunately, when I upgraded to a computer with 64-bit system the encryption no longer worked. According to the Maxtor website the software is not compatible with 64-bit OS. Seagate also has stated that they have no plans to update the software. So if you think you might switch to Windows 64-bit in the future look for a different drive.
Summary: Don't waste your money on this... I've had one a little over a year... or should I say 2 of them. Had to take the first one back to the store, it malfunctioned right after I bought it. Now it's totally shot! I use it strictly for backing up files for finances and photo's... My computer guy said it's no good! I haven't had it 18 months... now I have to go spend more money on a new one.
Summary: I purchased this unit to work as a storage drive for an exceedingly large iTunes library that was being streamed amongst various computers and AppleTVs in my house. It worked fine for about eight months, after which it began to mount and unmount randomly. Eventually, it just stopped mounting altogether. System Profiler showed no devices attached.
Summary: Just try to get help from the manufacturer! If the software on this drive gets corrupted you might as well throw it away. You will loose all of your data!!! Why can't you just go to their support page and get a fix? You have to register for god knows what freaky reason. Then send them an e-mail then wait until you just give up because the will never return your E-mail.
Summary: I am in tears right now because I lost all of my daughters pictures and videos due to this piece of crap. I am beyond words with grief and can only warn you to STAY AWAY - it should be a crime to manufacture something that is so emotionally destructive. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Oh My Gosh.
Summary: This was my second Maxtor One-Touch. The other is a One-Touch 3 and luckily it is still working. The One-Touch 4, 750GB drive failed without warning. As I was only using it as a secondary backup to the One-Touch 3, I haven't lost any data. It is still under warranty, so I'm having Maxtor replace it. Of course I will never trust the replacement and will need to purchase another (certainly non-Maxtor) drive to use as tertiary backup.
