Summary: re: LaCie 301848U USB 2.0 Neil Poulton 1TB Rugged XL eSATA External Hard Drive The case is nice and cushiony! I think this drive will have decent shock resistance. My problem was trying to use it with SBS2008 on a DL360G5 server. Initial plug in and detect was ok, but when trying to run the SBS backup, the entire server bogged down to thousands of times slower than normal. Exiting the backup did not help, not did removing power from the drive.
Summary: Be aware that this is a 3.5" drive, not the usual little 2.5" firewire/usb drives. So it's a bit larger, not quite as portable. But it works the same, and the eSATA port is a very nice addition for those of us with them installed on our computers. There is USB as well, of course.
Summary: The drive works fine, as expected. No problems at all. However, being a big fan of the smaller 2.5" rugged drives, I bought this sight unseen without reading the description. Turns out it's a 3.5" drive in a much larger enclosure that looks exactly like the smaller ones in a picture but is actually much larger.
Summary: Great drive for the price. However, do not use these Rugged drives as slave drives (i.e., do not leave them switched on for hours). They eventually over heat, and can fail: my 2 TB drive failed during summer use when the room temp was 28 Celsius.
Summary: I was quiet impressed with the speed of this drive but the size is a factor, plus all the wires I'm not used to as most of my other externals are the portable ones. All in all it does exactly what it says on the tin.
