Summary: I bought this drive in 2013 and the cable failed or the socket got damaged in 2014. I was really excited to have a "rugged" small portable drive when I bought it to go with my recently purchased used Macbook but most of my files were on PC so I set up FAT to deal with both.
Excerpt: I've had several of these Lacie portable hard drives in the past -- all have worked flawlessly, reliably and without a hitch. This most recent drive was an unwelcome exception. I brought it to a video shoot to offload camera footage. The unit failed straight out of the box.
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, High Capacity, Portable, Quiet
Summary: USB came loose and will not connect all the time. This is apparently a problem with this drive for many other people too. Clearly there is a defect with this drive happening so much. I may update this review after I speak with manufacturer and how they handle replacing this.
Summary: Extremely disappointed with this drive. Unfortunately all of the comments about Lacie's quality and poor support seem to be true. I paid extra for this drive over its peers so that I could get the extra performance from the built in thunderbolt cable, but that fails.
Summary: The alleged high speed throughput for this family of drives is only for the 250MB/500MB version(s), which are SSD's. The 1TB and 2TB drives use old, slow traditional rotating drives and get (at best) 90 MB/S. False advertising and misleading specifications. Stay away.
Summary: I bought this hard drive with high hopes after a couple of people suggested it. I use it for all of my school files and i transport it back and forth between home and school. I have had it for 7 months and it stopped working.
Summary: This is not a plug-and-play drive that works like a normal USB stick. It will not work (at all) unless you install LaCie's software for it, which is not optional. Besides taking up GBs (!) of space on the hard drive, the software probably is loaded with all sorts of NSA backdoors.
Summary: I had the 500gb version of this. It was a good hard drive until it died. I'm not sure how long hard drives should be expected to last, but I just tried to hook it up and nothing.. and of course the warranty is expired.
