FireWire 800 port failed in first 3 months

Greg F "Buyer", Amazon
14 January 2013
  • Summary: I have owned MANY of these LaCie Rugged drives throughout the years — and unfortunately it's a little hit and miss on the quality. I've had drives fail, and this drive specifically I bought in June 2012 and in August the FireWire 800 port no longer worked.

Firewire and USB versatility is a plus; but it runs hot

Photos, Amazon
10 August 2012
  • Summary: I've had the 320 GB version of this drive for nearly two years now. I use it to manually back up copies of files and to move files between my iMac and my Toshiba (Win 7) notebook PC.

Choose an OS, you only get one

Ashkon H., Newegg
17 January 2012
  • Summary: If you only have a Mac, or you only have a PC, get it! I bought one for my Macbook Pro when they had firewire 800 (not sure if they still do as it seems like they come out with a new model during the time it takes them to ship the darn thing over from China). Man, was it blazing fast!
  • Pros: Very durable, this thing ZOOMS with firewire 800; I've never seen such speed.
  • Cons: You cannot transfer files between a Mac and a PC without formatting the entire drive (or partitioning--but then you may as well buy 2 500GBs and save yourself the $$). This is a FATAL FLAW.

LaCie Rugged 1TB Triple Interface: Solid drive with poor Firewire choices

T. Parker, Amazon
3 December 2011
  • Summary: I use a pair of these drives for video fieldwork, backing up DSLR cards and holding HDV archives until I'm back home. The drives are solid performers with decent transfer rates. My only disappointment is that LaCie chose to put one Firewire 800 port and one Firewire 400 port on the drive.

Runs hot

TV Shooter "TV Shooter", Amazon
4 October 2011
  • Summary: I'm a video editor and the description clearly says that it is a good drive for editing. Well, for me the drive runs hot and I've got too much on the line, a hot drive is not to reassuring!

Fast, Sturdy, and Does the Job

Al C., Amazon
5 September 2010
  • Summary: I have owned this for about 4 months and I believe that it's great. I have tested it on both a Mac and Windows computer and it performs well on either computer. Here's what I love about this hard drive: -7200 rpm: This is how fast the drive spins.

Too Hot To Handle???

Mark, MacMall
16 June 2010
  • Conclusion: Unit works excellent however if you need it for long term use where the drive has to be accessed frequently expect lots of heat. Unit really heats up and gets hot, I don't know if this will effect the life span of the unit. If used infrequently it stays cool.
