Summary: I study photography at an art school and almost every student on campus owns one (if not several) of these drives. Staff and faculty suggest them because of their low fail rate and the "rugged" nature of the product (since students are often not the gentlest with their equipment). I bought one, even though one can find cheaper alternatives out there, because of their reputation and because I needed a great portable drive for daily use.
Summary: After just a month of using this drive the Firewire 800 port stopped working. I ordered it specifically for use of FW 800 and am now stuck with just another another USB/FW 400 drive. I have NOT contacted LaCie for a replacement, so I can't rate their...
Summary: I really enjoyed my first several months with my LaCie harddrive. It was great. The set up went smoothly (I use a Mac). I loved the ability to partition a few gbs off from the get go for use with a PC. It was orange. And it was my first portable hard drive like that, so the ease of transportation was a dream come true. That is until it up and died on me recently.
Summary: I purchased this item from Amazon on Feb 10, 2010. It fails on Mar 2, 2010. It worked great for the first 20 odd days! I contacted Lacie on Mar 2 and got the run-around for two days. I purchased the $49.99 Premium Care for this drive to help expedite support. It is now Mar 5, and Lacie has not responded to my support ticket (the last correspondence indicated I still needed to pay for shipment back to Lacie.
Summary: When you first plug in the product, the Lacie Setup Assistant appears. As the documentation explains, it can only be run once. If it fails, it cannot be run again. But as LaCie's own website admits, "Some products that come with LaCie Setup Assistant have a problem when installed on Snow Leopard." When I attempted to run Setup Assistant, the process failed and the Mac would not mount the drive.
Whilst it appears tough, it failed quicker than my last HDD

Summary: Bought this as I've had two toshiba's fail on me. This lacie hasn't lasted as long as they did. Very frustrating given the extra price and the fact that I don't believe that I'm tough on them. This lives either on my desk at home with my laptop or when on the move it lives in my Lowepro camera bag, a very well protected bag that doesn't get thrown around. Just have to keep trying to find a reliable brand but have to say I'm very disappointed.
Summary: I was initially very happy with the LaCie but then the Firewire 800 port starting giving a lot of grief after just 2 months. Now incredibly difficult to even use the drive even with changing to other cables. Very poor hardware. Had to buy equivalent Iomega eGo drive now to replace this.
Summary: Have bought 3 of these drives and was very happy with there performance until the most recent purchase, the drive died after less than a month taking 3 days hard work with it, complained to lacie and the response from them follows. Thank you for contacting LaCie support. We're sorry to hear that your Rugged has failed as soon as it has.
