Summary: LaCie is well known for their stylish, durable, and flexible storage solutions. The 1TB LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 301952 external hard drive is a great step-up from the 500GB model, and aside from being slightly thicker it performs equally well. Not only is it compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems, but it is also backward-compatible with USB 2.0 in case your system does not yet support the newest specification.
Pros: Resistant- exclusive protective aluminum design, Compact- slim-line and only slightly thicker than 500GB model, Future-proof- features latest USB 3.0 specification for ultra-speeds, Support- backed by two-year warranty; 10GB online storage for one year
Cons: Pricey- costs relatively higher than other terabyte hard drives
Since this drive is made to be used mainly with notebooks I decided to test it out on Dell XPS M1210. Interestingly enough LaCie provides what they call “USB Boost”, which is a proprietary driver that LaCie says will optimize the data transfer rate between your computer and your LaCie hard drive.
So the first test I did was with HD Tune 3.5 without USB Boost installed…
An average of 29.2 MB/s isn’t bad for a USB connected hard drive.
Pros: Small, Made of aluminum, Included backup software, 10GB 1year membership to Wuala online storage
