Hard Cilcking noise after 2 years

Anonymous, Newegg
  • Summary: We bought 2 of these, the second one is still working but it was put in used 1 year after it was purchased so i might have another year on that one.
  • Pros: The design is good. We needed to get a USB3.0 drive for backups for one of our server data. It was quiet and fast while it worked.
  • Cons: Warranty says 2 years. This drive dies after 2 years and 1 month. Too bad. The drive was always running hooked to a server so no movements and no power issues. Now, the drive keeps making this loud click noise and the computer cannot recognize it and it just asks to reformat. LaCie website offers to recover data for 300dls. The actually had this issue as their only topic under 'Troublshooting' for this drive which makes me think others have had the same issue.

Do not buy....drive failed after 3yrs of (very) light use!

  • Summary: Would not recommend at all. I purchased this drive back in January 2012 and I've seldom used it for sporadic backups. I may have used this drive 2hrs per week and yesterday, for no apparent reason, the drive stopped working. Plugged it in, turned it on....and nothing, not even a tiny sign of life. I am now outside my warranty period and will try to contact LaCie to see if they can help.

Upgrade from more common brands

Lilee F., Amazon

  • Summary: The LaCie drive was easy to set up on my iMac and is running Time Machine backups exactly as it should. It was not the cheapest drive available, but I have a pocket-size LaCie drive that's worked flawlessly for many years so I'm hoping I can expect the same quality from this drive. One of my previous backup drives was a My Book by Western Digital, which worked fine for a couple of years and then totally died one day without warning.

Nice drive but falls short

  • Excerpt: I purchased this to backup my photos after a recent crash. Easy setup sleek, quiet, compact. Ran the genie software for the initial backup and noticed the file counts between source and target we off. Did it a second time because my PC had gone to sleep during the first pass...same issue. Checked the logs for the backup and noticed that it was excluding some files (it tagged them as not unique)....."whiskey tango foxtrot".
  • Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, Easy To Set Up, High Capacity, Portable, Quiet
  • Cons: Annoying Backup Software, Unreliable
