Excerpt: I HAD THIS HARD DRIVE FOR 2 WEEKS. I USE THIS HARD DRIVE FOR BACK UP ALL MY MUSIC, PHOTO, AND VIDEO. THIS UNIT IS SOLID AND GOOD TRANSFER SPEED. THIS DRIVE ALSO ALLOW YOU TO ENCRYPT A PASSWORD FOR PROTECTION.
Summary: I am using this as a external hard drive when using Time Machine on my sister's Macbook Pro mid-2009 model. All I had to do was connect it to the Macbook, reformat the hard drive, and did a backup. Unfortunately, her Macbook only supports USB2.0 so it took about 2.5hrs to do a complete backup. The exterior is just one small chunk of aluminum. Not sure if this provides any real protection but it looks really slick.
Excerpt: This LaCie hard drive is perfect for backing up precious photos on the go. I shoot a large number of photos with my Nikon D800. The photo files are often very sizable. If I have time between shoots to do preliminary edits and digital markups, I often need a compact hard drive to backup my work while I am away from the "cloud". This LaCie hard drive is compact and rugged; just the thing for this application.
Pros: Easy To Install, Fast, Highly Compatible, Quiet, Reliable, rugged
Everything you'd expect, with a couple of minor quarrels.

Summary: Cool design, small, quiet, quick. What else do you want? Well, I question the position of the USB3 cable input. It's located on the narrow long side of the case, which makes little sense, especially if you already have several drives and want to stack them. The cable itself is rather on the stiff side, and for some reason the plug that goes into the computer always seems to be facing in the wrong direction. A softer, and/or longer cable would help avoid that problem.
Summary: I buy these LaCie Porsche drives as Time Machine Backups for my MacBookPro laptops. The drives have 1TB of space and they are backing up laptops with 500GB drives. This is the best solution that I have found for backing up a laptop in a cost effective manner. The USB 3.0 is plenty fast for backing up files but I can tell you that it feels like forever when you have to recover an entire laptop. Speed is not why I continue to buy these drives - it is reliability.
