Summary: I have purchased this same model twice (once under warranty) and this is the second time it has crashed and simply stopped responding. I will not open the case to research a problem; the expense alone should prevent problems in the first year. I plugged this in once a month and even after replacing the adapter cords the light blinks on and shuts right off; same as last time. Won't start up, disk won't power up.
Pros: Beautiful, sturdy design.
Cons: Cords need to be replaced within the year so there is a solid connection; not speedy - took nearly 3 hours to back up 1TB of data.
Summary: This drive lasted only 7 months as a Time Machine backup device on my network. Then, one day I received a notice on my Mac stating that the most recent backup failed. I inspected the drive and observed it was not powered on. I went through various troubleshooting steps including swapping out the power supply and trying the drive on another computer. Nothing would resuscitate my LaCie drive. I exchanged several emails with LaCie support.
Summary: I've had two Western Digital and one Seagate drive die on me, both within two years. The Lacie drive has an on/off button, it's a nice feature to help preserve the drive. You don't need a backup HD connected 24/7 which in my opinion ruined the other drives. Having a button to turn off the drive is very convenient and easy to use.
Summary: I use this drive just store all my music, movies and pictures. The USB 3.0 transfers files quickly, an how it looks on my desk. Great drive that I bought two. I use the other one to back up my work with the easy to use software that comes with the drive. High quality product. A must buy.
