Summary: I purchased this drive to use as an external boot drive for my iMac. I installed all of my apps and operating system on it intending to increase the speed of my system. It was a success. My system is quite a bit faster than with the internal spinning drive due to the thunderbolt connection and the fast Solid State Drive. Be aware that this drive is two 250 gb drives and not one 500gb.
Summary: I am using this for running Intelligent Artifact's GAIuS version 3.0 (big data, artificial intelligence framework) in a Linux (Ubuntu version 12) virtual machine (VMWare Fusion version 4.1.4) on a Macbook Pro running OS X version 10.8.5. GAIuS is very I/O intensive. Using the Macbook Pro's internal hard drive while running very large training data sets would slow down the computer making it difficult to run other applications.
Summary: Applications launch faster, maybe two bounces. Spotlight searches are amazingly fast, no perceptible lag. I cloned the standard 500GB Mac mini internal to the Little Big Disk with Super Duper. It took about four hours for 460GB. Now I boot off the external and do a nightly clone back to keep the internal as a boot-ready backup. I also have a 1.5 TB external data drive and a 2TB external time machine drive. Using the SSD as a boot makes it feel like a much faster machine.
Summary: Pretty good external hard drive. Love the fact that is was light weight and it was able to take a beating, but it did fail, but no part on the products fault and I was in school and used it every where so it did get banged up quite a bit.
