Summary: I am using a 4TB version - very nice design and great performance. The speeds are about 170 MB/s for read and write. I am giving this disk a 3 stars only because of the loud fan - it is crazy how loud this thing is!
Summary: I've owned a few LaCie drives in this Porsche design enclosure before... a FireWire 80GB, a FireWire 160GB, and a FireWire 320GB. This is my first foray into going with the USB 2.0 mechanism. Without a doubt what attracted me the most was the price. Compared to some other retail boxed 500GB external hard drives, this seemed like a good value. I've had mixed experiences with the LaCie drives in the past.
Summary: This drive has worked fine for the 2 weeks I have had it. However it does not respond to the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" energy saver option on the Mac. When you press the on button it spins until you press the button again. I do not know the cost in energy or reduced life expectancy of the drive but I would have selected a drive that would shut down when not in use if I had known.
Summary: This is my second 500 gb lacie. I purchased one in 2006 for Acronis back-up images and it is rock solid and quiet. I bought another in 2007 for video and music. They appear identical, however the new drive has a smaller power supply. I reformatted both drives for NTFS before using them. The new one is making noises when read/writing that the first one has never made and this was from the moment I connected it. These are drive mechanism sounds, not fan noise.
Summary: I have a Lacie drive at work that uses the firewire connection on my Mac. I loved the price (on sale) of this item and the capacity, but the connection is a USB 2.0. It is very slow, and I have to eject the drive from my Mac desktop in order to be able to eject a CD. It can also take 3-5 minutes for it to mount on my desktop once plugged in and turned on. The capacity is great, the price was right - so if you have patience, this is a good drive to use for back-up.
Summary: Nothing to add to the other reviews as far as functionality goes; just to say that I bought two of these in 2009: one with Firewire 400 and one with 800. The 400 one is still going fine; the 800 one crashed a few days ago. It is of course out of warranty. I phoned LaCie, who told me that if they offered repairs on this model, which they don't, it would be (IIRC) $89, so it would be cheaper to replace it.
