The LEVEL of customer service is ZERO... I HATE THIS

  • Summary: Do not waste your time. Seriously. I purchased this unit for a PC, and a d2 Quadra at the same time for a MacBook Pro. The LaCie Hard Disk plugged in nicely, then downloaded older software from the disk. When prompted to download an upgrade, I was hit with repeated error boxes. Went to the LaCie support site and downloaded the most current software for this unit. After a few reboots, it started working fine.

Warning to Mac Users: Stay away from Lacie

  • Summary: Warning to Mac users: I purchased one Lacie Big drive 18 months ago, another Lacie Big drive 24 months ago. I just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. Neither drive works after the upgrade. The Lacie web site said that the "solution" to this problem was to revert back to Snow Leopard. Not really a solution. But I assumed that maybe this meant that a firmware upgrade or something was in the works. So I contacted Lacie support.

Sudden death 2 weeks after warranty ended

  • Summary: I've used my LaCie hard disk for 2 years (+3 weeks) now. All was fine and dandy until just a few days ago when it went out in a puff of smoke (figurative, not literal). When I went to check my warranty I found that it is only covered for up to 2 years. Not cool. I'm a grad student (read: broke) and having to buy another just 2 years (+3 weeks!) later is really painful. I think I'll be going with a different brand next time.

Dropped Mount

  • Summary: This hard drive would not stay mounted. It kept turning itself off. I wound up returning it and purchasing a different model from another vendor. I have had good results with other purchases from Amazon and with several LaCie drives that I own, but this one was a lemon.

clicks and Alzhimers

  • Summary: I bought this drive and within a few weeks, it clicks and stopped working. I returned it and got a new drive without a problem but lost all my files. The second drive lasted 8 months and then after working fine one day, it couldn't access any of my files and after trying several other USB ports and a different computer, it somehow formatted itself!! Even if I got a new one under warranty, I couldn't trust it again for the third time. It's going in the bin.

Hot, Slow, and poor customer support

  • Summary: I bought a couple of these hard drives. They run very hot and noisy. The customer support is the worst. I had one fail two days out of warranty and they wouldn't cover it. They offered me a "coupon" for a new unit. I lost everything. These are just poorly made hard drives. They use cheap parts. If you are going to store important information... don't do it on LaCie drives.

died and took a year of my life down with it

  • Summary: I was soooooo happy with this product.... for a little over a year. I filled it with tons of stuff: movies, music, pictures, backup of the contents of my entire laptop, etc. And then it just up and died, taking a year's worth of data with it. How can I go back to a product meant for backing up data when it isn't built to last?

Piece of crap cable, piece of crap customer service

  • Summary: This piece of Donkey *#&( has a flimsy USB<>Firewire cable that consistently loses connection with my computers, even sitting completely still. I don't have to move it, adjust it, or even walk hard on the ground. It just randomly disconnects! And this happened while I was watching a movie, now my entire 750GB of movies that I spent countless hours transferring from DVD to HD is now completely missing. WHAT THE EFF!!! this thing is such a piece of crap.

Failed within 24 hours

  • Summary: Installed on a Friday. Said the drive was not mounted, finally got it to recognize. Ran a back up after trying to partition (would not allow), went to check the backed up data and the drive icon was nowhere to be found. Went to the Lacie site and followed the trouble shooting guide which sent me to the Mac System Profiler and could not locate the drive as connected. Tried it on our new iBook, and a brand new 27" G5. Won't recognize. Send it back tomorrow.
