Summary: This hard drive would not stay mounted. It kept turning itself off. I wound up returning it and purchasing a different model from another vendor. I have had good results with other purchases from Amazon and with several LaCie drives that I own, but this one was a lemon.
Summary: It's so nice when something is easy to set up, easy to use and just works without a hassle. I wanted to get an external hard drive so I could archive some of my recorded shows/movies and free up some room on my dish detwork VIP722 DVR receiver. I've used Lacie hard drives for over 10 years to back up PC and Mac files and I've found they have been dependable. I went with a 1 TB because the DVR receiver manual said my DVR would not read any more than that.
Summary: I bought this drive and within a few weeks, it clicks and stopped working. I returned it and got a new drive without a problem but lost all my files. The second drive lasted 8 months and then after working fine one day, it couldn't access any of my files and after trying several other USB ports and a different computer, it somehow formatted itself!! Even if I got a new one under warranty, I couldn't trust it again for the third time. It's going in the bin.
Conclusion: So far so good. I have now bought two of these and just today ordered a LaCie 2TB. This means that I like them. I am consolidating photos from several lower capacity external hard drives onto this one drive and really cleaning up my desk.
Conclusion: The LaCie Drive that I recently purchased as a back up drive is modest in price, and visually unobtrusive. Rather than adding another item to the visual clutter that accompanies my computer and its peripherals, the new drive is visually unobtrusive. A subtle blue glow from underneath indicates data traffic but is not direct or annoying. The drive is silent but fast, and at 1 Terrabyte will provide me with plenty of auxiliary storage without slowing me down.
Summary: I bought a couple of these hard drives. They run very hot and noisy. The customer support is the worst. I had one fail two days out of warranty and they wouldn't cover it. They offered me a "coupon" for a new unit. I lost everything. These are just poorly made hard drives. They use cheap parts. If you are going to store important information... don't do it on LaCie drives.
