Poor Operation, Now Non-functional after 1 year

David Fuchs, Amazon
3 March 2015
  • Summary: After good experiences with smaller d2 LaCie drives, I chose the 4big from a number of other options (Drobo, Synology, etc.) Unfortunately, the product produced an exceptionally loud fan noise, even when the disks weren't being written or read.

Worst big-ticket purchase I've ever made

Justin S., Newegg
24 January 2015
  • Summary: After wrestling with LaCie's tech support for over 6 months (and having me send the drive in for testing, only to not do any of the things that make it unmount), they finally sent me a new unit.
  • Pros: Data storage itself is pretty reliable. Reasonably fast. Has both USB 3.0 and 2 Firewire 800 ports.
  • Cons: • unexpectedly eject over USB 3.0 on a Mac when the drives spin down • never go to sleep when connected via Firewire 800 • have remarkably poor build quality (the fan rattles sometimes until you bump it) • take over 30 seconds to spin up from sleep mode • completely ignore the Mac's energy saver ...

Most unreliable storage device I've ever owned

J. S. Sevakis, Amazon
24 January 2015
  • Summary: I've now had two of these things. I've had two because LaCie let me return one, and they sent me another, and it had the exact same problems, so I'm going to assume that they all...

I was super excited to get this drive

Sadie, Amazon
29 June 2014
  • Summary: I was super excited to get this drive. It was the size I needed and I have had great luck with LaCie's smaller external hard drives. Unfortunately, the entire drive failed less than one year after I purchased it. All of my data for a huge project were stored on this drive.

Very high rate of failure

iscalise, Amazon
20 February 2014
  • Summary: I bought 6 of these units. Between 2 years 4 of them have failed that required the whole unit being replaced. Before that, I had to have 4-6 of the disks in different units replaced. Could not afford the downtown of these systems and have spent over $500 to get advance replacements.

Volume Failed and I Lost EVERYTHING

Ananta, Amazon
7 March 2012
  • Summary: I'm a filmmaker working with all digital workflow. I figured this RAID drive would be an excellent way to backup my raw footage while working on multiple projects. For the past 2 years I have been using this drive for exactly this purpose.

Bummer product

Sean R Kelly, Amazon
10 September 2011
  • Summary: I'm on my third FAILED Lacie 4tb. Support has sent two units after red lights on drives and now the third unit keeps disconnecting from my Apple desktop. Running OS 10.6.8 and it's so frustrating to have NO back up with all my video files.

Warning to Mac Users: Stay away from Lacie

tamjm, Amazon
2 September 2011
  • Summary: Warning to Mac users: I purchased one Lacie Big drive 18 months ago, another Lacie Big drive 24 months ago. I just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion. Neither drive works after the upgrade. The Lacie web site said that the "solution" to this problem was to revert back to Snow Leopard. Not really a solution.
