Summary: I write for fun and sometimes money. I edit and critique short stories and novels for friends and others. And I have a constant need to keep my data safe. The Iomega Prestige 1TB external hard drive allows me to do just that. It is a small, compact unit that sits easily out of the way. While my computer does not have the new USB 3 ports this unit can use, it is pretty fast on USB 2 ports.
Summary: The Prestige Hard Drive "SuperSpeed USB 3.0" is a relatively compact hard drive (though also a bit heavy). I have an iMac running OS X 10.6.7. Its main (internal) hard drive recently died after only 18 months from purchase. I already had an external hard drive for backups (thank goodness), but the recent drive failure made me consider additional measures. I read a suggestion from a friend to get a 2nd hard drive for "redundant backups.
Summary: I find this drive to be exellent in value and performance. Installation is easy, Windows 7 recognizes the hard drive immediately, and transfer speeds are fast. My motherboard is about a year old and only has USB 2.0, so I could not check out the USB 3 features. I was delighted to find that the drive works really well with Acronis Home; it backed up my entire system in about 1.5 hours.
Summary: This unit was super easy to install. It took a moment to figure out how to format it for our iMac, but it was mostly intuitive. We have Time Machine running now and the drive hums quietly along. No more fears about losing our mountains of music and photo files in the case of a crash.
Summary: Maxtor Aluminum USB is nice but was limited at 250GB - still in use. WD MyBook USB 250GB smelled bad (caustic plastics/glue/rubber), was slow, and sometimes shut itself down mid-use (no on-off switch) - wiped it & pitched it. WD Passport Essential 500GB is terrific for mobile use (no power brick / USB only) - love it - recommended (early unit with plain drive, no junk-ware or hardware encryption).
Pros: Durable, Fast Connectivity, Quiet, Reliable, Versatile
HD failed in 3-5 days - tech support says power supply

Summary: Delivered from Amazon in 2-days at extra cost, installed OK. After copying 250GB from an older Iomega drive, it lasted about 3-5 days, then Win Vista said I had to format the drive in order to use it??!! Tried that but two Vista machines said format failed! Tech support said they first wanted to rule out the power supply and would send another in 7-10 business days. I respectfully requested **quality support with overnight shipping at their cost.** Finally they agreed.
Summary: Running Mac OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard without the snow) on a Mac Mini with a 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor. Possible pros: Followed directions to use the partition tab of Mac's disk utility to format the drive as Mac OS extended (journaled), selecting the GUID partition table option. Drive formatted quickly. Verify Disk (under First Aid in Disk Utility) showed the volume "appears to be okay." Moved 20 Gb from an overstuffed Mac Mini drive to the Iomega.

Summary: Summary - Great device, easy to use, good value for price. The product was delivered in the time frame promised and was ready to use right out of the box. Nothing else to buy. For the price it is a great way to back-up your entire HDD and then remove the device to an off-site location and use a similar device for the next back-up. Rotating the devices can help ensure you have the back-up you need when you want it.
Summary: My daughter wanted a reliable backup for her MacBook so I sent for the the Prestige 500 GB. It arrived quickly and was very easy to install. It required a reformat for OS X as the original format was for a PC. I used the utilities that came with the Mac. Using free backup software I found on the Internet (LaCie Silverkeeper) I set up a backup routine which my daughter can now use to backup her Mac laptop.
