Summary: I use this external hard drive for Mac OS Time Machine backups, and it has served me extremely well over the past several years. I'm up to about 50% capacity and don't anticipated running low anytime soon, so I feel that 3TB provides plenty of space.
Summary: I have two of these for backup and video editing storage. I like how they totally turn off when not in use. Because I had having to unplug stuff every time I record audio. Got my first one of these almost six years ago and it is still serving me quite ably. I wish the product were not discontinued.
HGST XL3000 Desk 3TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, Black (0S03092)
1 July 2014
Summary: I've had this external drive for 3years now and I must say it has been working great this whole time. It is kind of big to be carrying around which sucks because sometimes I need information I have stored on it while I'm on road. Also, It can be loud at times when I am copying files over.
Summary: Returned it cause it was cheap. I decided to ignore most of the reviews at the time of purchase and get it anyway. Lo and behold, I had the same trouble everyone else did. The drive wouldn't spin up, but the light came on.
Summary: Do yourself a favor: DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!!! I bought this drive about a year ago for the first time. At the time I considered other options but this seemed to offer the best value for money.
Summary: I have a Hitachi XL1000 1.0TB drive (0S02490). It is also of questionable integrity. After archiving several thousand family photos, we found a small percentage were corrupted. They are either unreadable or have horizontal striped images that are slightly offset (right-left) and improperly coloured.
Summary: Got this a while back to expand my memory options, the power adapter ended up dying after about a year so I have to get another one, hope this isnt a sign of drive failure next, its not very fast for transfering but it has a tough design and a nice glowing logo (that seems too bright sometimes) At...
Summary: I have had this for almost 2 years now and it is great! I use it with my Macbook Pro and I have it partitioned into 3 parts. My Time Machine backups, a photo partition and a movie partition and all work extremely well, albeit a little sluggish to open initially, but once it's open, it works...
This very competent external drive has no on/off switch and problems staying connected.

Summary: While it seems a good external drive it is sometimes necessary to disconnect and then reconnect the drive for it to be recognized as present. (Is there a problem with the connection wiring?) I needs an on/off switch so this kind of problem can be dealt with more easily.
Summary: Unlike many of the 1-star reviews, my Hitachi XL1000 worked fine for monthly backups for about 18 months. Then it started doing all the weird things others mention. Most often my computer won't even recognize that the external drive is attached.
