Summary: Bought this because of the low price. While it's formatted for mac os you can reformat this for windows (NTFS) os. After doing some googling on the web I was able to reformat this without jumping through too many hoops. Be advised that reformatting takes several hours. Also it's not usb 3, but usb 2. Set up 3 partitions for backups from my 3 computers. 750 gbs for less than $50, good deal!
Summary: You can't tell from the misleading product description because this most crucial fact is buried in the "more information" section of the product "demo," but this device will NOT work with a windows machine. The actual product package has the words "for Apple MacBook" prominently displayed, so I can't fault the manufacturer, but of course Rakuten.com did not show an image of the package. I cannot believe how dishonest the seller was about this item!
Summary: The build quality is superb - its built like a tank. Since it also uses firewire it is faster than the USB 1TB LaCie it replaced. The drive does makes a sound when starting up but remains fairly quiet while in use. It's Mac ready out of the box and comes with all the cables you need.
Summary: Seems to be plug n play product. Easy to install, automatic TimeMachine backup setup. Used to replace WD 2TB book disk which locked me out with an "unable to write" message. Had previous problem with WD drive, so far the Hitachi is performing well - seems to be a lot faster than the WD drive.
Summary: I am using this G-Drive with my MacBook Pro running Lion for TimeMachine backups. I had seen comments about several other drives I had considered that they didn't work well with TimeMachine on Lion, but so far (only a few days) this seems to work well. Actually, I partitioned in two for storage and TM. I don't find it too noisy. The light, as others have noted, is an extremely bright white light, so I wouldn't want it pointing toward me.
Summary: Just (1) day prior to our 3 day production shoot in New York, one of our producers realized we did not have the correct back-up hard drives for our Director Of Photography's digital camera for our production. For some reason we forgot we would require our own (of course to have for editing and future work on our full production). To say the least, J&R saved the day, because you had exactly what we needed in both quality and availability on the spot. Thank You J&R!
